Abstract

Abstract Video signals (Y, U, V) from a telecine machine are accompanied by a blemish signal (D) obtained for example by infra-red scanning of a colour film) indicating the presence of scratches, dirt etc. This controls a switch (22) to substitute information from another part of the film (e.g. the previous frame, from a frame store 33). To prevent substitution with information also containing blemishes, the blemish signal in respect of the substitute information is made available (flag store 36) to suppress the substitution and switch to an alternative source such as a interpolator (31). The use of a movement detector, (not shown) to suppress substitution from another frame when motion occurs, is also described. The circuitry can be adapted for use in conjunction with a videotape dropout detector.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 23
Claim 1
Independent Claim 77 words
Apparatus for concealing defects in a video signal comprising means (22) responsive to signals representing the presence of a blemish on the image area represented by video signals supplied thereto to substitute into the video signals video signals which correspond to a different area of the image, characterised by means (36) for making available defect signals corresponding to the said different area, and when these indicate the presence of a defect thereon to suppress the said substitution.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 77 words
Apparatus for concealing defects in a video signal comprising means (22) responsive to signals representing the presence of a blemish on the image area represented by video signals supplied thereto to substitute into the video signals video signals which correspond to a different area of the image, characterised by means (36) for making available defect signals corresponding to the said different area, and when these indicate the presence of a defect thereon to suppress the said substitution.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 90 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, including a video store (33) for making available, simultaneously with first video signals in respect of one frame, second video signals in respect of a different area of the image; means (36) to store defect signals so as to make available first and second defect signals simultaneously in respect of the areas represented by the two video signals; and switching means (22) responsive to the first defect signal to effect the said substitution, and responsive to the second defect signal to suppress the said substitution.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
Apparatus according to claim 2, in which the defect signal storing means comprises means for inserting into the video store in place of the video signal, a flag comprising a code reserved for the indication of a defect, and means at the store output for recognising the code.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus according to claim 2, in which the defect signal storing means comprises a separate flag store.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
Apparatus according to any preceding claim, for concealing film blemishes in a telecine machine, in which the said different area is the same region of another film frame.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 4, in which the input video signal is provided from a videotape recorder, and including a dropout detector for providing the said defect signals.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
Apparatus according to any preceding claim, including a movement detector (53), and means (52) arranged upon the detection of movement to suppress the said substitution.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 65 words
Apparatus for concealing defects in a video signal, comprising means (22) responsive to signals representing the presence of a defect on the image area represented by video signals supplied thereto to substitute into the video signals video signals corresponding to the same area of another frame, characterised by a movement detector (53),and means (52) arranged upon the detection of movement to suppress the said substitution.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 65 words
Apparatus for concealing defects in a video signal, comprising means (22) responsive to signals representing the presence of a defect on the image area represented by video signals supplied thereto to substitute into the video signals video signals corresponding to the same area of another frame, characterised by a movement detector (53),and means (52) arranged upon the detection of movement to suppress the said substitution.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 36 words
Apparatus according to claim 7 or 8, for concealing film blemishes in a telecine machine, in which the substitution means substitutes into the video signals video signals corresponding to the same area of another film frame.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 27 words
Apparatus according to claim 8, in which the input video signal is provided from a videotape recorder, and including a dropout detector for providing the defect signals.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 27 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, including means (31) operable upon said suppression to substitute, instead, information derived from a third area of the image.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus according to claim 11, in which the third area is the adjacent area of the same frame.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 21 words
Apparatus according to claim 11 or 12, in which the information is generated by interpolation across the area of the defect.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 62 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, in which the substitution means is preceded by a first substitution stage ' (70) operable in response to the defect signals to effect substitution of substantially all areas indicated as defective, the substitution means being arranged in the event that it becomes overloaded, to allow the information substituted by the first stage to remain.
Claim 17
Independent Claim 62 words
A method of concealing film blemishes in a telecine machine, in which blemished picture information is replaced, in response to signals indicating the presence of a blemish on the film, by information from a different area of the film, characterised by the step of suppressing such substitution when blemish signals corresponding to the said area indicate the presence of a blemish thereon.
Claim 18
Independent Claim 62 words
A method of concealing film blemishes in a telecine machine, in which blemished picture information is replaced, in response to signals indicating the presence of a blemish on the film, by information from a different area of the film, characterised by the step of suppressing such substitution when blemish signals corresponding to the said area indicate the presence of a blemish thereon.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method according to claim 15, in which the different film area is the same region of another film frame
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method according to claim 16, including the step of suppressing such substitution when motion is detected.
Claim 21
Independent Claim 69 words
A method of concealing film blemishes in a telecine machine, in which blemished film information is replaced, in response to signals indicating the presence of a blemish on the film, by information derived from the corresponding area of another frame of the film, characterised by the steps of detecting, movement in the scene between the two film frames, and upon the detection of such movement suppressing the said substitution.
Claim 22
Independent Claim 69 words
A method of concealing film blemishes in a telecine machine, in which blemished film information is replaced, in response to signals indicating the presence of a blemish on the film, by information derived from the corresponding area of another frame of the film, characterised by the steps of detecting, movement in the scene between the two film frames, and upon the detection of such movement suppressing the said substitution.
