Claim 1
Independent Claim
188 words
A safety liner for tires, including a ring (10,10') formed by a plurality of rigid, arcuate members (11, 12, 11', 12') releasably secured together in a tire (T) by coupling means (25) coaxially about a bearing (66,84) that is secured in the form of a band around the drop center (61, 85) of the associated tire rim (R,R') so that when the tire becomes flat it engages and rotates said ring relative to said bearing and characterized by the fact that said coupling means comprises a plurality of links (26) extending between and connecting together confronting ends (13, 14) of adjacent members(11, 12) in said ring, means (31) for securing one end of each link in a recess (27) in one of said confronting ends (13) of an adjacent pair of members, and means (.42, 45, 51) for adjustably mounting the opposite end of each link in a registering recess (28) in/the other confronting end of said pair of members and operable selectively to shift the associated link into or out of said registering recess thereby to draw together or to separate the confronting ends of said members.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
66 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in claim 1, wherein said bearing (61, 85) is generally C-shaped in configuration and said ring (10,10') has its inner peripheral surface seated slidably in a circumferential groove (71, 88) formed in the outer peripheral surface of said bearing so that opposite sides of the groove prevent any lateral movement of the ring when it rotates on the bearing.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
67 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in claim 1 or 2, wherein said adjustable means includes a circular eccentric (42) rotatably mounted in each of said members adjacent one end thereof for rotation manually into different positions of adjustment, and means (45, 49, 51) connecting said eccentrics to said opposite ends of said links to shift the latter in response to the rotation of said eccentrics.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
110 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein said means for securing said one end of each link in a recess (27) in one of the confronting ends of said members comprises a plurality of pins (31) each of which is releasably mounted in said one end of a respective link to extend slidably through an opening in the associated member thereby to secure said one end of said links for limited pivotal movement about axes which extend parallel to the axis of the ring formed by said members, said pins (31) being removable from said links to permit complete separation of said members.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
63 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in claim 3, wherein said circular eccentrics (42) are rotatably mounted, respectively, in said opposite ends of said links, and an adjusting pin (45) extends through a rectangular opening (43) in each eccentric and is manually operable for rotating the. associated eccentric about an axis (B) extending parallel to and laterally offset from its centerline (A).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
67 words
. A safety liner for tires as defined in claim 5, including an indexing plate (51) mounted to rotate in a recess (52) formed in the sidewall of each member, and connected to the associated adjusting pin (45) to impart rotation thereto, and means (56, 57) for releasably securing each of said plates in one of a plurality of different angular positions about its axis of rotation.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
66 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein said C-shaped bearing comprises a C-shaped band (61) made of the same material as said members, and a C-shaped layer (72) of bearing material different from the first-named material, and secured to the outer periphery of said band (61) and defining said circumferential groove in which said members are seated.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
30 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in claim 7, wherein said layer of bearing material is made from galvanized steel and said members are made from a polyester elastomer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
46 words
A safety liner for tires as defined in any of the preceding claims, wherein a plurality of arcuate reinforcing members (21, 22) made from a material different from said members are embedded in each of said members coaxially of the radius of curvature of the member.
