Abstract

Abstract A multi-mode reproduction machine or copier incorporating a full width read/write bar (50) having at least one linear array (41) of LEDs (42) either for selectively scanning a document original (11) in a read mode or for exposing the copier photoreceptor (22) in a write mode. An array (45) of lens elements is provided for focusing the LED array on both the document original and the photoreceptor, the read/write bar and lens array being combined in a unitary structure selectively movable between read and write positions. In an alternative embodiment the read/write bar and lens array is disposed in a fixed position to permit selective reading of the image developed on the photoreceptor or writing of images onto the photoreceptor.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 115 words
Combined image reading and writing apparatus including, for the reading mode, means (50) for producing an output signal representing an image of a document original (11) and, for the writing mode, means (50) for recording images on an imaging surface (22) in response to an image input signal, the apparatus being characterised by an array (10) of scanning elements (42) operable as light sensing elements in the reading mode and as light-emitting elements in the writing mode, and control means (75) for operating said elements either as light-sensors to read the image on or derived from said document original or as light-emitters to selectively expose the imaging surface in accordance with the image input signal.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 115 words
Combined image reading and writing apparatus including, for the reading mode, means (50) for producing an output signal representing an image of a document original (11) and, for the writing mode, means (50) for recording images on an imaging surface (22) in response to an image input signal, the apparatus being characterised by an array (10) of scanning elements (42) operable as light sensing elements in the reading mode and as light-emitting elements in the writing mode, and control means (75) for operating said elements either as light-sensors to read the image on or derived from said document original or as light-emitters to selectively expose the imaging surface in accordance with the image input signal.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
The apparatus of claim 1 including a viewing station (60) where a document original (11) may be read, and wherein said scanning elements (42) are operated by said control means to either read the document original at the viewing station or expose the imaging surface in accordance with the image input signal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
The aparatus of claim 2 wherein said viewing station includes a platen (16) for supporting a document original to be read.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 53 words
The apparatus of claim 1 including means (24, 25, 26) for forming a developed image of a document original on said imaging surface (22), and wherein said scanning elements are operable by said control means to either read said developed image or expose the imaging surface in accordance with an image input signal.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 19 words
The apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 4 in which said scanning elements comprise light emitting diodes.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 33 words
The apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 5 in which the length (41) of said array of scanning elements is at least equal to the effective width of said imaging member.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The apparatus of any one of claim 1 to 6 in which said control means includes matrix switching means (78, 80) for actuating said elements individually.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 48 words
The apparatus of claim 7 in which said scanning elements are arranged in M groups of N scanning elements each, said matrix switching means having N first switches for controlling actuation of ir dividual scanning elements, and M second switches for controlling actuation of said M groups individually.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 54 words
The apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 8 including a lens array (45) for focusing said scanning elements on said document original or said imaging member, said lens array comprising a plurality of lens means arranged in at least one linear array, with one lens means for each of said scanning elements.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 87 words
The apparatus according to claim 10 including means (48, 56) supporting said scanning elements and said lens array for movement between a read position where said scanning elements scan said document original and a write position where said scanning elements scan said imaging member, said control means being adapted to move said supporting means to place said scanning elements and said lens array either in said read position or in said write position in response to a demand for image signals or a demand for image copies.
