Abstract
Abstract Extended action controlled release compositions are formed by incorporating into a controlled release matrix for a medication a mixture of the salt form of the medication and the free base form of the medication preferably in a proportion of 75%-25% by weight of the salt form to 25%-75% by weight of the free base form, the weight amounts being calculated with respect to the active base.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
60 words
Extended action controlled release pharmaceutical composition, comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable controlled release core or matrix for pharmaceutically active agents having distributed therethrough a pharmaceutically effective amount of a pharmacologically active substance, said pharmaceutically effective amount comprising a proportion of the salt form of said pharmacologically active substance and a proportion of the free base form of said pharmacologically active substance.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
47 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1, in which from 75 to 25% by weight of the salt form and from 25 to 75% by weight of the free base form are present, the amounts being based on the pharmacological active moiety of the pharmacologically active substance.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that it is in tablet form.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
18 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that it is in capsule form.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
39 words
A composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the pharmacologically active substance is amitryptaline, atropine, chlorpheniramine, chlorpromizine, codeine, dexbrompheniramine, diphenylhydramine, doxilamine, ephedrine, hyoscyamine, morphine, oxycodone, papavarine, phenylpropanolamine, propranolol, quinidine, scopolamine, theophylline or thioridazine.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
45 words
A composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the pharmaceutically effective amount of said pharmacologically active substance comprises between 60% and 40% by weight of the salt form and 40% - 60% by weight of the free base form.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
101 words
A method of producing an extended action controlled release pharmaceutical composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 which comprises mixing the pharmaceutically effective amount of the pharmacologically active substance comprising the salt form of the pharmacologically active substance and the free base form of the pharmacologically active substance with hydroxyethylcellulose to form a uniform mixture, hydrating the mixture with water to form a paste thereof, drying the paste so formed to obtain granules of the mixture, adding the granules to a molten higher alcohol, cooling to form granules thereof, and forming the resulting granules into tablets or capsules.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
16 words
A method as claimed in claim 7, characterised in that the higher alcohol is stearyl alcohol.
