Abstract

Abstract A device for measuring intrauterine pressure during pregnancy and during labor prior to the rupture of the amniotic membrane comprises an elongate catheter (2) having a uterine end (4) and an instrumentation end (6). The end (4) of the device is introduced into the uterus. The catheter has an inflatable pressure transmitting membrane (8) and another inflatable membrane (20) for anchoring the end (4) of the catheter in position within the uterus. Flow control means (10, 28, 32) are provided for controlling the fluid used to inflate the membrane (8, 20).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 127 words
A method for measuring intrauterine pressure during pregnancy and during labor prior to the rupture of the amniotic membrane, characterised by the steps of providing an elongate catheter (2) having at one end (4) thereof at least one inflatable membrane (20) and pressure-transmitting means (8,18) for making pressure-transmitting contact with the amniotic membrane, said pressure-transmitting means (8,18) being connectable to a pressure monitor, said inflatable membrane (20) serving for providing anchorage, inside the uterus, for said catheter and purchase for said pressure-transmitting means (8,18); introducing the end (4) of said catheter (2) via the vagina and the cervical canal into the lower portion of the uterus; inflating said inflatable membrane (20) with a fluid, until said anchorage and said purchase are established; and monitoring said intrauterine pressure.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 59 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said pressure-transmitting means (8,18) is an additional inflatable membrane (8) and said catheter (2) is attachable with one end to a pressure monitor, the method further comprising the steps of inflating said additional membrane (8) with fluid, and establishing communication between said additional membrane (8) and said pressure monitor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as claimed in claim 2, further characterised by the step of bleeding all air from said catheter while inflating said additional membrane.(8).
Claim 5
Independent Claim 143 words
A device for measuring intrauterine pressure during pregnancy and during labor prior to the rupture of the amniotic membrane, characterised in that it comprises an elongate catheter (2) having a uterine end (4) and an instrumentation end (6), and being introducible with its uterine end (4) into the uterus; at least one deformable membrane (20) inflatable by means of a fluid, which membrane (20) is fixedly attached to and, in its noninflated state, substantially closely surrounds, a portion of said catheter substantially contiguous with the uterine end (4) thereof, pressure-transmitting means (8) located at said uterine end (4); at least one conduit, leading from a first end located remote from said uterine end (4) to a second end (34) opening to the outside of said catheter at a point within said membrane-surrounded portion, which first end is fittable with first flow-control means (32).
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
A device as claimed in claim 4, characterised in that said pressure-transmitting means (8) is an additional deformable membrane (8) inflatable by means of a fluid.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 142 words
A device as claimed in claim 4 or 5, characterised in that it further comprises second flow-control means (10), fittable to said instrumentation end (6), said flow-control means (10) being adapted to selectively connect said instrumentation end (6) alternatively to instrumentation for the monitoring and/or recording of said intrauterine pressure, and to syringe means for inflating said additional membrane (8); an additional conduit (26) for the bleeding of air from said catheter (2) and said additional membrane (8) during the inflation thereof, said additional conduit (26) leading from a first end thereof located outside said catheter (2) close to the instrumentation end (6) thereof, to a second end located inside said catheter (2) close to the uterine end (4) thereof, which first end is fittable with third flow-control means (28) to close off said additional conduit (26) after said bleeding of air.

Independent Claim 25 words
A device as claimed in any one of claims 4 to 6, characterised in that said first flow-control means (32) is a one-way valve (32).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
A device as claimed in claim 6, characterised in that said second flow-control means (10) is a three-way stopcock (10).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
