Abstract

In a process for the reduction or oxidation of reducible or oxidizable substances in an aqueous solution, a gaseous reducing or oxidizing agent is fed to the solution through a fine-pore catalyst layer which contains an electrochemically active catalyst. In order to increase the rate of conversion, the catalyst layer on its side facing the solution is in electrically conductive connection with bodies made of electrically conductive material, which have a large surface area overall. The bodies are distributed in the solution at least in the region of the catalyst layer and increase the surface area which is effective for the conversion of the dissolved substance.
