Abstract

Abstract The present invention relates to the compliant section (16) on contact elements (10) which are received in plated through holes in printed circuit boards and are structured to hold such elements therein without soldering. More particularly, the invention discloses an improved structure relative to the legs (20, 22) forming the moving members of the compliant section (16). The invention further discloses an improved structure (24) to stabilize the element (10) against normal forces.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 106 words
A contact element (10) of the type having a compliant section (16) for being received in a plated through hole (32) in a printed circuit board (34) to retain the contact element (10) against movement, characterized in that a stabilizer section (24) is provided on the contact element (10) immediately adjacent the compliant section (16), said stabilizer section (24) including beveled or radiused surfaces (26) leading to lateral sides (28) with the distance between opposing sides being such that upon inserting the stabilizer section (24) in the hole (32), the corners of the sides (28) will at least bear against the wall of the hole (32).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 106 words
A contact element (10) of the type having a compliant section (16) for being received in a plated through hole (32) in a printed circuit board (34) to retain the contact element (10) against movement, characterized in that a stabilizer section (24) is provided on the contact element (10) immediately adjacent the compliant section (16), said stabilizer section (24) including beveled or radiused surfaces (26) leading to lateral sides (28) with the distance between opposing sides being such that upon inserting the stabilizer section (24) in the hole (32), the corners of the sides (28) will at least bear against the wall of the hole (32).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
A contact element (10) of the type having a compliant section (16) consisting of two offset legs (20, 22) extending along a longitudinal axis, characterized in that the legs (20, 22) are pre-stressed by being initially spread apart in opposite directions and then push back towards each other to a predetermined relative position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A contact element (10) of the type having a compliant section (16) consisting of two offset legs (20, 22) extending along a longitudinal axis, characterized in that the legs (20, 22) are pre-stressed by being initially spread apart in opposite directions and then push back towards each other to a predetermined relative position.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 83 words
A contact element (10) according to claim 2 characterized in that a stabilizer section (24) is provided immediately adjacent the compliant section .(16), said stabilizer section (24) including beveled or radiused surfaces (26) leading to lateral sides (28) with the distance between the sides (28) being such that upon inserting the stabilizer section (24) in a plated through hole (32) in a printed circuit board (34), the corners of the sides (28) will at least bear against the wall of the hole (32).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
A contact element (10) according to claim 2 characterized in that the legs (20, 22) are spread apart a distance at least sufficient to provide a clearance therebetween.
