Abstract

Abstract A method of, and system for, managing assembly and formatting of footnotes and body text. Following preparation and separate storage of both body and footnote text, assembly of the footnote text with the body text can be accomplished in one pass for a review of the appearance of the document in its to-be-printed format. Two techniques are available for assembly of the document. The technique selected will be the one which will provide optimum performance and will be determined by the amount of footnote text being assembled on a page. Thereafter, the document can be printed and/or the body and footnote text edited. If any editing is performed, the new and/or edited footnote text can be re-assembled in one pass.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 116 words
Method of managing assembly of separately stored document body and footnote text for display review, in a word processing system, characterized in that it comprises the steps of : a) counting body text lines up to a footnote reference point ; b) counting footnote text lines for a corresponding footnote ; c) determining whether said counted footnote text lines will fit within a footnote buffer ; d) determining whether said counted body and footnote text lines will fit within a page buffer; and e) loading said footnote text lines from said footnote buffer and said body text lines into said page buffer as long as all of said footnote lines will fit within said page buffer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 116 words
Method of managing assembly of separately stored document body and footnote text for display review, in a word processing system, characterized in that it comprises the steps of : a) counting body text lines up to a footnote reference point ; b) counting footnote text lines for a corresponding footnote ; c) determining whether said counted footnote text lines will fit within a footnote buffer ; d) determining whether said counted body and footnote text lines will fit within a page buffer; and e) loading said footnote text lines from said footnote buffer and said body text lines into said page buffer as long as all of said footnote lines will fit within said page buffer.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
Method according to Claim 1 characterized in that it includes specifying a number of lines to be displayed.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
Method according to Claim 2 characterized in that it includes displaying a number of lines from said page buffer equal to said specified number of lines.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
Method according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 characterized in that it includes loading said body text lines into the top of said page buffer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
Method according to any one of Claim 1 to 4 characterized in that it includes loading said footnote text line into said footnote buffer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
Method according to any one of claims 1 to 5 characterized in that it includes loading said footnote lines into said page buffer following said text lines.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 36 words
Method according to any one of Claim 1 to 6 characterized in that it includes formatting a footnote which will not fit within a said footnote buffer and storing said formatted footnote in a bulk store.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
Method according to any one of Claims 1 to 7 characterized in that it includes formating said body text stored in said page buffer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 35 words
Method according to any one of Claims 1 to 8 characterized in that it includes marking lines from said footnote text which will not be displayed for inclusion with a following page to be displayed.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 99 words
Word processing system for implementing the method according to any one of claims 1 to 9 characterized in that it comprises : a) means for sequentially couting body text lines up to a footnote reference point and footnote text lines for a corresponding footnote until a count is obtained equal to or less than a count for a line capacity of a page buffer; b) means for loading said footnote text lines and said body text lines into said page buffer ; and c) means for causing a display of a specified number of lines of said page buffer.
