Abstract

Abstract An elastomeric foam composition is useful in dentistry for separating the gingiva from the adjacent teeth, for cleaning, as a pressure pack and wound dressing and as a cushion between dental appliances and the gums of a dental patient. The composition is made from a pastelike system of components which expands at least about 150% to produce a uniformly fine-grained foam composition having a resistance to compression such that a force of at least about 50g per square cm. is required to result in 10% deflection. In a preferred embodiment, the elastomeric foam composition is formed from a system of components which includes silicone fluids, siliceous fillers, crosslinkers, hydrogen sources and a catalyst, all present in amounts which provide a paste-like consistency before foaming and resistance to compression after foaming such that 80g. per square cm. is required to produce a 10% deflection.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 69 words
A biocompatible elastomeric foam composition which is useful in dentistry, characterized in that the foam is developed from a paste-like system of components such that after a volume expansion of at least about 150%, a uniformly fine-grained foam material is obtained having a resistance to compression such that a force of at least about 50g. per square cm. is required to result in a 10% deflection of the material.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The foam composition of claim 1 wherein the system of components comprises a material selected from the group consisting of silicones, thiocolrubbers, polyvinylethers, hydrocoloids and algenates.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 105 words
The composition of claim 1, wherein the foam has a resistance to compression such that a force of about 80g. per square cm. is required to result in a 10% deflection of the material and wherein the system of components includes from about 190 to about 210 parts by weight of silicone fluids; from about 85 to about 110 parts by weight of a siliceous filler, from about 12 to about 16 parts by weight of a crosslinker; from about 18 to about 22 parts by weight of a source of hydrogen; and from about 45 to about 55 parts by weight of a catalyst.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 172 words
The foam material of claim 3 wherein the system of components comprises a first component formed from 95 to 105 parts by weight of a OH terminated polydimethylsiloxane polymer; from 52 to 63 parts by weight of a filler; from 9 to 11 parts by weight of an SiH functional silicone fluid; from 9 to 11 parts by weight of a low-viscosity hydroxyfunctional polydimethylsiloxane fluid; from 9 to 11 parts by weight of Ph2MeSiOH's from 3-5 parts by weight of normal propyl orthosilicate; and, optionally, from 7-9 parts by weight of a white pigment and a second component formed from 95 to 105 parts by weight of a trimethyl terminated polydimethyl siloxane fluid having a viscosity of about 12,500 centistokes; from about 35 to about 45 parts by weight of a siliceous filler; from about 45 to about 55 parts by weight stannous octoate; optionally from about 1.5 to about 2.5 parts by wt of a colored pigment; and, optionally, from about 0.1 to about 0.2 parts by weight of a flavoring.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 122 words
The composition of claim 1 when used in a process for temporarily separating the gingiva from the adjacent tooth in the mouth of a dental patient, the process comprising the steps of (a) placing the system of components around at least one tooth so that the margin between the gingiva and the tooth is contacted; (b) placing a carrier over the components, the carrier being of a shape and size sufficient to contain the foam as it is developed by the system of the components so that said foam develops in contact with said margin; (c) maintaining the developed foam in pressure contact with said margin for at least about five minutes; and (d) removing said foam from contact with said margin.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
The composition of claim 5 wherein the process includes the additional subsequent step of performing a dental procedure which is enhanced by the temporary separation of the gingiva from the tooth.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The composition of claim 6 wherein the additional subsequent step comprises taking a dental impression of at least said margin.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The composition of claim 6 wherein the additional subsequent step includes subgingival curettage.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 101 words
The composition of claim 1 when used in a process for cleaning the surface of a tooth or dental appliance which comprises the steps of (a) placing the components of the system around at least one tooth or appliance of a dental patient; (b) placing a carrier over the components, the carrier being of a shape and size sufficient to contain the foam composition as it is developed by the system of components so that said foam develops in contact with said tooth or appliance; and subsequently (c) moving said foam composition and said tooth or appliance relative to each other.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
The composition of Claim 9 wherein said moving is accomplished by chewing or swallowing actions of said dental patient.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 67 words
The composition of claim 1 when used in a method for forming a foam cushion between the gums of a dental patient and a dental appliance, said method comprising (a) placing the components of said system on the surface of the appliance which is normally in contact with the gums; and (b) placing the appliance against the gums while the foam composition is developed from the system.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 56 words
The composition of claim 1 when used for forming a foam dressing in a wound in the mouth of a dental patient, the method comprising: (a) placing the components of the system in contact with the wound; (b) allowing the foam composition to develop; and (c) maintaining the foam in contact with the wound during healing.
