Abstract

Abstract A synthetic wound covering consisting of a thin, tough, elastic hydrophilic membrane whose thickness does not exceed 60µ, having a water permeability of 2,400-8,000 g/m2/24h at 37°C and 60% relative humidity being a product obtained by grafting a hydrophilic monomer to a thin body of polyurethane. One group of polyurethanes suitable for making the artificial skin is characterised by a recurring unit of the formulain which R1 and R2 are each a group -(CH2)x- where x is an integer of 1 to 8 and the average value of n is 2.5 to 20.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 48 words
A synthetic wound covering consisting of a thin, tough, elastic hydrophilic membrane whose thickness does not exceed 60µ, having a water permeability of 2,400-8,000 g/m 2 /24h at 37°C and 60% relative humidity being a product obtained by grafting a hydrophilic monomer to a thin body of polyurethane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 48 words
A synthetic wound covering consisting of a thin, tough, elastic hydrophilic membrane whose thickness does not exceed 60µ, having a water permeability of 2,400-8,000 g/m 2 /24h at 37°C and 60% relative humidity being a product obtained by grafting a hydrophilic monomer to a thin body of polyurethane.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
An artificial skin according to claim 1, wherein the polyurethane has a module of elasticity below 1500 PSI, and elongation at break above 500%.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 76 words
An artificial skin according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the polyurethane is a polyester polyurethane having a recurring unit of the formula -[(OR 1 OCOR 2 CO) n OR 1 OCONH-C 6 H 4 CH 2 C 6 H 4 -NHCO]-in which R 1 and R 2 are each a group -(CH 2 ) x - where x is an integer of 1 to 8, and n has an average value of 2.5 to 20.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
An artificial skin according to claim 3, wherein average n is from 2.5 to 8.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
An artificial skin according to claim 3 or 4, wherein R 1 and R 2 are each a tetra methylene group -(CH 2 ) 4 -.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
An artificial skin according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the hydrophilic monomer is a vinyl type monomer.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
An artificial skin according to claim 6, wherein the hydrophilic monomer is acrylamide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
An artificial skin according to claim 6, wherein the hydrophilic monomer is hydroxyethyl acrylate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
An artificial skin according to claim 6, wherein the hydrophilic monomer is acrylic acid.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
An artificial skin according to claim 6, wherein the hydrophilic monomer is hydroxyethyl methacrylate.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
An artificial skin according to any one of claims 1 to 10 whose thickness is not less than 10u.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 20 words
An artificial skin according to any one of claims 1 to 11 whose physical properties are affected by water absorption.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 22 words
An artificial skin according to any one of claims 1 to 12 adapted to peel off from the healed wound when dry.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 100 words
A method of making an artificial skin according to any one of claims 1 to 13 comprising preparing an aqueous solution of hydrophilic monomer and a salt of a transition metal whose ion is capable of serving as inhibitor for homopolymerization of the monomer, immersing into such a solution a film of a polyurethane as defined in any one of claims 1 to 5 and whose thickness does not exceed 60p, subjecting the solution with the film in it to conditions inducive of radical graft copolymerization and continuing the reaction until a product of the desired water permeability is obtained.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 23 words
A process according to claim 14, wherein the induction of radical graft polymerization is effected by means of irradiation with an ionizing irradiation.

Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to claim 15, wherein 60 C o is used as a source of said radiation.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to any one of claims 14 to 16, wherein the inhibitor is Ce 4+ salt.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 30 words
A process according to claim 14, wherein the induction of radical graft copolymerization and simultaneous inhibition of homopolymerization is effected by the incorporation in solution of a Ce 4+ salt.
