Abstract

Abstract Blends of polyphenylene ether resin and a small amount of certain ethylene copolymers or terpolymers containing hydroxyl and carbonyl functional groups, optionally including impact modifier can be molded into articles which possess improved Gardner impact strength. The improvement is considerably greater than that which is achieved by use of the same amount of low density polyethylene.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 40 words
A polyphenylene ether resin composition characterized by the presence of a copolymer or terpolymer of ethylene containing one or more hydroxyl functional groups and one or more carbonyl functional groups, in an amount sufficient to improve the Gardner impact strength.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 40 words
A polyphenylene ether resin composition characterized by the presence of a copolymer or terpolymer of ethylene containing one or more hydroxyl functional groups and one or more carbonyl functional groups, in an amount sufficient to improve the Gardner impact strength.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A composition according to Claim 1, characterized in that the polyphenylene ether resin is poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A composition according to Claim 1 or 2 characterized by containing an impact modifier for the polyphenylene ether resin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
A composition according to Claim 3, characterized in that the impact modifier is rubber-modified high impact polystyrene.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A composition according to any of Claims 1 to 4 characterized in that the rubber is polybutadiene.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
A composition according to any of Claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the amount of the copolymer or terpolymer of ethylene is from 0.1 to 5 parts by weight for each 100 parts by weight of polyphenylene ether resin.
Claim 8
