Abstract
Abstract A dely which may take the form of a hydraulic flow restriction (either fixed (60, 62) or variable (64, 66) with a given parameter such as vehicle speed) or a suitable electronic delay circuit (78), is interposed between a device (20, 74) which outputs a signal indicative of the front wheels being steered and a device (50-56, 90) which is operatively connected with the rear wheels and which varies the orientation of the rear wheels in a manner to "steer" same in response to the delayed signal to control the yawing of the vehicle (10).

Claim 1
Independent Claim
128 words
A steering system for a vehicle having a forward wheel, a rear wheel and a longitudinal axis, comprising: a steering arrangement operatively connected with said front wheel for steering same in response to a manually produced steering signal; means for producing a signal indicative of said forward wheel being steered by said steering arrangement; a device operatively connected with said rear wheel which is responsive to said signal indicative of said forward wheel being steered for applying a bias to said rear wheel which tends to vary the orientation of said rear wheel with respect to said longitudinal axis; and CHARACTERIZED BY signal modifying means interposed between said signal producing means and said device operatively connected with said rear wheel for modifying the signal applied to said device.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
106 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 1, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said' steering arrangement includes a power steering servo mechanism, IN THAT said signal producing means takes the form of the power steering control valve of said power steering servo mechanism, AND IN THAT said device takes the form of a rear wheel suspension in which an expandable member is provided, said expandable member including a variable volume chamber fluidly communicated with said power steering control valve through a conduit so as to be expanded by a pressure signal produced by said power steering control valve when said front wheel is steered and produced said bias.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 2, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said signal modifying means takes the, form of a flow restrictor having a predetermined orifice.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 2, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said signal modifying means takes the form of flow restrictor having a variable orifice.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
36 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 4, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said signal modifying means further comprises a vehicle speed responsive device operatively connected to said flow restrictor for varying the size of said variable orifice.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
96 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 1, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said signal producing means takes the form of a steering degree sensor which outputs an electrical signal which varies with the amount by which said front wheel is steered from a neutral steering position IN THAT said device takes the form of servo motor means operatively connected to said rear wheel and responsive to said electrical signal for applying said bias,AND IN THAT said signal modifying means takes the form of a delay circuit interposed between said steering degree sensor and said servo motor means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
33 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 6 CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said delay circuit is arranged to increase the phase delay of the output thereof with increase in frequency of the input thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
43 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said signal modifying means takes the form of an apparatus which delays the transmission of the signal produced by said signal producing means to said devices operatively connected to said rear wheel.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
34 words
A steering system as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said signal modifying means takes the form of an apparatus which attenuates the signal fed to said device connected with said rear wheel.
