Abstract

Abstract A disk surface (11a) in a magnetic record disk file employing a transducing slider (12) which is closely spaced from the disk surface and has side rail members (16,17) extending in the direction of disk motion and tapered portions (18,19) at the leading edge, is cleaned of contaminant particles by moving the slider in increments from the outside disk diameter to the inside diameter, so that the particles first encounter the slider/inner side rail and are swept away, rather than first encountering the tapered portions and being wedged into the magnetic coating.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 1
Claim 1
Independent Claim 289 words
A method of cleaning contaminants from a roating magnetic record disk surface (11a) with a magnetic head slider (12) which is positioned closely adjacent said disk surface (11a), and is movable radially of said disksurface, said slider (12) having a tapered leading edge (18), a pair of non-tapered side edge (16, 17), and a trailing edge (20), said trailing edge being aligned radially with the centre of said disk surface (11a), characterised by a movong said slider (12) from the outside diameter of said disk surface (11a) toward the inside diameter of said disk surface (11a) in increments of motion sufficiently small so that any contaminants on said disk surface (11a) first encounter one of said non-tapered side edge (16, 17), whereby said contaminants are loosened from said disk surface (11a) by contact with said one of said non-tapered side edges. 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which radial movement of said slider is halted after each increment of motion for a period of a time at least equal to the time of one revolution of said disk surface. 3. A method as claimed in claim 2, in which said radial movement is halted for a period of a time equal to the time of several revolutions of said disk surface. 4. A method as claimed in claim 3, in which said disk surface is rotating at 3600 RPM and said radial movement is halted after each increment of motion for at least 100 milliseconds. 5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, in which each of said increments of motion is no greater than the distance said tapered leading edgs is offset from the centre of said disk surface relative to said trailing edge.
