Abstract

Abstract A naphtha reforming process wherein, in a series of catalyst-containing reforming zones, at least about 30 percent and preferably 50 percent to about 90 percent of the catalyst in the rearward-most reforming zones is constituted of a platinum-rhenium catalyst with a weight ratio of Pt:Re of at least 1.5:1, and the catalyst in the forwardmost reforming zone is constituted of either platinum of a platinum-rhenium catalyst with a weight ratio of Pt:Re of less than 1.5:1. The naphtha-hydrogen contacting in the reforming zones is carried out at temperatures ranging from about 454.4°C (850°F) to about 510°C (950°F) (equivalent isothermal temperature, E.I.T.), at gauge pressures ranging from about 1034.3 kPa (150 psig) to about 1413.4 kPa (350 psig) and at gas rates ranging from about 445 litres/litre feed (2500 SCF/B) to about 802 litres/litre feed (4500 SCF/B).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 171 words
A process for reforming a naphtha feed in the presence of hydrogen in a reforming unit which is operated in a semi-regenerative, cyclic or semi-cyclic operating mode, the reforming unit having at least one catalyst-containing on-stream reactor through which the naphtha and hydrogen are flowed in contact with catalyst at reforming conditions, characterized by concentrating within at least the most rearward (downstream) reaction zone of the reactor or reforming unit at least 40 weight percent, based on the total weight of catalyst in said reactor or reforming unit, of a rhenium-promoted platinum catalyst having a weight ratio of rhenium to platinum of at least 1.5 to 1, subject to a maximum of 90 weight percent of said catalyst when the reforming unit is operated in a semi-regenerative mode, and concentrating within any remaining most forward (upstream) reaction zone of the reactor or reforming unit, a platinum catalyst or rhenium-promoted platinum catalyst which contains rhenium in a concentration providing a weight ratio of rhenium to platinum of 1 to 1, or less.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 171 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 64 words
A process according to claim 1 further characterized by concentrating within at least the most rearward (downstream) reaction zone of the said on-stream reactor or reforming unit at least 50 weight percent, based on the total weight of catalyst in the reactor or reforming unit, of a rhenium-promoted platinum catalyst having a weight ratio of rhenium to platinum of at least 1.5 to 1.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 75 words
A process according to claim 1 or claim 2 further characterized in that the reforming unit comprises a plurality of catalyst-containing on-stream reactors connected in series, the hydrogen and naphtha being flowed from one reactor to another to contact the catalyst in each reactor at reforming conditions, at least part or some of the reaction zone(s) of the reforming unit being constituted by at least part of one or more of the catalyst-containing on-stream reactors.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 74 words
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 3 further characterized in that the said reforming process is carried out at temperatures ranging from about 454.4°C (859°F) to about 510°C (950 * F) (equivalent isothermal temperature, E.I.T.) at gauge pressures ranging from about 1034.3 kPa (150 psig) to about 1413.4 kPa (350 psig) and at gas rates ranging from about 445 litres/litres feed (2500 SCF/B) to about 802 litres/litre feed (4500 SCF/B).
