Abstract
Abstract The present invention relates to an improved liquid-phase adsorption process for the separation of hydrocarbons. The separation process utilizes a magnetically stabilized fluidized bed through which the liquid hydrocarbon feedstream is passed to adsorb components of the feedstream, followed by desorbing the components. One of the many possible applications of this invention is in separation of isomers of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
153 words
A liquid phase process for the selective separation of hydrocarbon components from a liquid feedstream containing mixed hydrocarbon components to be separated comprising: (a) providing a bed of magnetizable adsorbent particles having a size through a 40 mesh screen, U.S. Standard, which are fluidized by the flow of liquid through the bed at a flow velocity within the range of 5 to 3000 mm/minute, said adsorbent particles being capable of selectively adsorbing said components from said feedstream; (b) applying a magnetic field to said bed at a strength sufficient to maintain said bed in an orientation in which staging is preserved and backmixing is suppressed and within the range of 50 oersted up to 1000 oerstead; (c) adsorbing at least a portion of said components from said liquid feedstream by passing said liquid feedstream through said magnetically stabilized fluidized bed; and (d) desorbing said components with. a liquid desorbent from said fluidized bed.
