Abstract

On the fixed side of an annular gap between the fixed part, i.e. generally the housing of a centrifuge and the rotor, a magnetic field sensor is arranged with which changes in the geometry of the gap are detected. In contrast to the conventional, this device works without contact and is mechanically far less complex. It also has the advantage that it emits an analog signal that is proportional to the deflection of the rotor and thus enables a change in sensitivity. This is important for ultracentrifuges, since less rotor unbalance is tolerable in higher rotary cells than in low ones. A differential sensor with two magnetic field-dependent resistors arranged on a permanent magnet is particularly preferred as a sensor.
