Semipermeable membranes of modified polystyrene, process for their manufacture and their use
Abstract
Semipermeable membranes made from modified polystyrenes are obtained by using styrene polymers with reactive groups (A) by chemical reaction with (a) a monomeric compound with at least two functional groups, (b) a polyfunctional oligomer or polymer and (c) a compound with at least one, preferably two, group (s) capable of reacting with (b) modified, if the reactive groups contain amino, hydroxyl or mercapto functions, (B) modified by chemical reaction with (b) and (c), provided that the reactive groups contain halogen atoms or aldehyde, cyanate or thiocyanate functions, or (C) modified by chemical reaction with hydroxylamine, (a), (b) and (c) if the reactive group contains a nitrile function. The new membranes show good stability against solvents, mechanical pressure or pH influences, but on the other hand also good flow (flux) and improved retention properties. Their molecular separation (separation) limits are in the range from 200 to 2000. They can be used for reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration processes.
