Abstract
Abstract The invention describes a method of lining a passageway (20) by everting into the passageway a liner. The resin (18) is applied to the everting face of the liner inside the passageway and the everting faces defined by absorbent material (14). A vacuum is applied to the portion of the liner which travels along the passageway and before eversion, so that the resin will be drawn into the absorbent material effectively.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
179 words
A method of lining a pipeline or passageway wherein a flexible tubular laminate (12, 14) comprising a resin absorbent material (14) inside a flexible membrane material (12), is everted into the pipeline (10, 140, 210) or passageway (50, 60) so that the resin absorbent material is applied to the surface to be lined, an uncured synthetic resin composition (18) is applied directly to the everting portion of the resin absorbent material whilst in the pipeline or passageway, and the resin is cured to form a hard lining in which the absorbent material is embedded, and the everted laminate is held by fluid pressure against the pipeline or passageway until the composition cures, characterised in that a vacuum is applied to the inside of the laminate (12, 14) whilst it is in the pipeline or passageway to extract air from the resin absorbent material (14) in the region where it everts to draw resin (18) into the resin absorbent material (14) at the point of eversion so that the resin (18) is absorbed by the said resin absorbent material (14).
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
22 words
A method according to Claim 1, characterised in that the laminate (12, 14) is everted upwards into the pipeline (140) or passageway.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
48 words
A method according to Claim 1, characterised in that the resin (18) is applied to the absorbent material (14) in the form of a plug (218) of an uncured synthetic resin composition in the pipeline or passageway to the other side of which is applied a back pressure.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
33 words
A method according to Claim 3, characterised in that the back pressure is applied by means of a resin retaining member (53) which partially embraces the everting portion of the laminate (12, 14).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
54 words
A method according to Claim 4, characterised in that the retaining member (53) is a dished member of which the outer diameter is approximately the same as the diameter of the surface of the pipeline or passageway (50) being lined to prevent resin (18) from escaping up branch connection pipelines (51) or passageways. "
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
43 words
A method according to Claim 1, characterised in that a shaped former (62) penetrates the laminate (12, 14) where it everts in the pipeline or passageway (60) said former (62) serving as a resin distributor to enhance application of the resin absorbent material.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
46 words
A method according to Claim 6, characterised in that the former (62) has a tapering end (66) which engages in the everting portion (64) of the laminate (12,14) and is of lobed cross-section and the laminate (12, 14) lies on the lobed cross-section with minimum creasing.
