Abstract

Abstract A system for controlling the charge air in a turbo-charged vehicle diesel engine with a charge air cooler comprises a two-way valve (10) having a position in which it conducts charge air from the compressor (6) via the charge air cooler (8) to the engine (1) cylinders, and a position in which it conducts the charge air past the cooler. The valve is controlled by the charge pressure and the ambient air temperature, so that essentially all of the charge air is led through a shunt pipe (9) past the cooler at a given low engine load (low charge pressure) and low temperature, which makes it possible to reduce particle. gas and noise emissions from the engine. As the ambient air temperature rises, the charge pressure limit at which the valve opens to supply charge air to the engine is lowered, so that the engine is supplied with charge air at a temperature determined by the load and engine speed, and independent of the ambient temperature.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 180 words
System for supplying combustion air to the cylinders in a combustion engine for vehicles, comprising a compressor for elevating the pressure of the air supplied to the air intake of the cylinders, a charge air cooler for cooling the charge air from the compressor, and a valve which permits the supply of charge air from the compressor directly to the engine air intake, by-passing the charge air cooler, characterized in that the valve (10;40) is a two-way valve controlled by the charge pressure and the temperature of the ambient air, said valve at a given ambient air temperature and at a charge pressure less than a predetermined pressure conducting essentially all the charge air past the charge air cooler (8), and at said ambient air temperature and at a charge pressure exceeding a predetermined pressure conducting essentially all of the charge air through the charge air cooler, said valve cooperating with a temperature-controlled means (30) which, at temperatures less than said given ambient air temperature, raises said predetermined pressure and, at temperatures exceeding said given temperature, lowers said predetermined pressure.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 180 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 153 words
System according to Claim 1, characterized in that the valve (10;40) is disposed in one of the branching pieces between a pipe (7) which conducts charge air to the cylinder inlets via the charge air cooler (8) and a shunt pipe (9) connected to said pipe in parallel to the charge air cooler, said valve being disposed, when the pressure is below a certain pressure interval, to conduct essentially all of the charge air via the shunt pipe to the cylinders, when the pressure is within said interval, to conduct the charge air both via the shunt pipe and via the charge air cooler, and when the pressure exceeds said interval, to conduct all the charge air via the charge air cooler, and in that the temperature-controlled means (30) is arranged to raise or lower, respectively, the limits of said pressure interval as the temperature of the ambient air drops or rises, respectively.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 94 words
System according to Claim 2, characterized in that the valve (10;40) has a gate (21;41) operated by a pneumatic operating means (22;45) comprising an air chamber containing a working element (23;46) joined to the gate, and which is loaded by a force dependent on the charge pressure towards a position in which the gate cuts off the connection between the compressor (6) and the cylinder air intake via the shunt pipe (9), and which is loaded in the opposite direction by a spring force and a counter-pressure force regulated by the temperature-controlled means (30).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
System according to Claim 3, characterized in that the temperature-controlled means is an overflow valve (30) the opening pressure of which varies essentially linearly with the temperature of the ambient air.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
System according to Claim 4, characterized in that the sealing element (31) of the overflow valve (30) is biased by a bimetallic spring (32) disposed so that the closing force varies essentially linearly with the temperature of the ambient air.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 108 words
System according to any one of Claims 3 - 5, characterized in that the pneumatic operating means (22;45) is a piston-cylinder arrangement the piston (23;46) of which is spring-biased towards a position in which the gate (21;41) cuts off the communication between the compressor (6) and the engine air intake via the charge air cooler (8), the piston cylinder chamber (24a) on the side towards which the spring force acts being in communication with the pressure side of the compressor, while the cylinder chamber (24b;48) on the opposite side communicates both with the pressure side of the compressor via a restriction (28;49) and with the overflow valve (30).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 65 words
System according to Claim 6, characterized in that the gate (41) is hinged and biased towards said position by torsion spring means (44), in that the piston (46) is joined to the gate by means of a flexible metal band (47), and in that the restriction to the pressure side of the compressor is formed by a gap (49) between the piston and the cylinder.
