Abstract

Abstract A branch-off between elongate substrates 6, such as telecommunications cables, is sealed by a recoverable sleeve 1 and a heat-activatable adhesive 3,4. The sleeve contains a reservoir 2 of adhesive 3, and the size of the crutch region between the substrates 6 and the sleeve 1 is limited by a clip 5. When the sleeve 1 is recovered the reservoir 2 substantially disappears to displace the adhesive 3 into the crutch region.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 103 words
A closure assembly suitable for enclosing a branch-off between at least two substrates, comprising: a recoverable sleeve, an end portion of which, when in use, defines a reservoir therein which substantially disappears on recovery of the sleeve; a heat-activatable adhesive or a sealant in the reservoir which is displaced into a crutch region between the substrates on substantial disappearance of the reservoir; and a clip which, in use,is positioned between the two substrates at an end of the sleeve, and which holds the two thicknesses of sleeve towards each other thereby limiting during recovery a cross-sectional area between the substrates and the sleeve.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 103 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
An assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the reservoir is permanent in the unrecovered sleeve.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
An assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the reservoir results from a deformation of the sleeve which is maintained by the clip.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the heat-activatable adhesive on the sealant is supplied to the reservoir attached to the clip.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the substrates are electrically conductive cables.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 12 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the substrates are telecommunications cables.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the recoverable sleeve constitudes at least part of a cable splice case.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
An assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the recoverable sleeve conditudes at least part of a telecommunications radial distribution enclosure.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 108 words
A method of forming an enclosure around a branch-off between at least two substrates which comprises: (a) surrounding the branch-off by a recoverable sleeve such that in use the sleeve has an end portion which defines a reservoir therein which substantially disappears on recovery of the sleeve, said reservoir containing a heat-activatable adhesive; (b) positioning a clip at said end portion so as to limit during recovery a cross-section of a crutch region between the substrates and the sleeve; (c) causing recovery of the sleeve and activation of the adhesive such that substantial disappearance of the reservoir displaces activated adhesive into the crutch region to close said cross-section.
Claim 11
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method according to claim 9, in which the recoverable sleeve is heat-recoverable, and step (c) comprises heating the sleeve.
