Abstract
Abstract A metal quenchant fluid which is a mixture of water and a polyalkylene glycol and a inhibitor is substantially nitrite free. The inhibitor is a soluble product obtained by mixing a carboxylic acid having 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, an amine such as an alkanolamine boiling above 150°C at atmospheric pressure and a copper chelating agent such as NN diethanol methylene benzotriazole.

A metal quenchant fluid which is a mixture of water and a water soluble polyalkylene glycol together with an inhibitor characterised in that it is substantially nitrite free and that the inhibitor is a soluble product obtained by mixing a carboxylic acid having 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, an amine which gives a soluble salt with the carboxylic acid and a copper chelating agent.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
67 words
A metal quenchant fluid which is a mixture of water and a water soluble polyalkylene glycol together with an inhibitor characterised in that it is substantially nitrite free and that the inhibitor is a soluble product obtained by mixing a carboxylic acid having 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, an amine which gives a soluble salt with the carboxylic acid and a copper chelating agent.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
A metal quenchant fluid as claimed in claim 1 characterised in that the carboxylic acid has 8 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
24 words
A metal quenchant as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 characterised in that the amine has a boiling point above 150°C at atmospheric pressure.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim

A metal quenchant fluid as claimed in claim 3 characterised in that the amine is an alkanolamine.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
33 words
A metal quenchant fluid as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 characterised in that the copper chelating agent is a aromatic triazole of sufficient solubility in water to provide an effective inhibitor.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
37 words
A metal quenchant fluid as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 characterised in that the relative amounts of carboxylic acid and amine are such that the pH is in the range 7.5 to 10.0.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
21 words
A concentrate suitable for dilution with water to give a quenchant fluid as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
72 words
A method of quenching a metal which comprises contacting a heated metal with an aqueous metal quenchant fluid containing a polyalkylene glycol and an inhibitor characterised in that it is substantially nitrite free and that the inhibitor is a soluble product obtained by mixing a carboxylic acid having 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, an amine which gives a soluble salt with the carboxylic acid and a copper chelating agent.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
