Abstract

Abstract A device for determining the soot content of an oil sample comprises an oil-sample receptacle 6 capable of transmitting infra-red radiation, an infra-red source 1-3 disposed on one side of the receptacle 6 and an infra-red detector 10 disposed on the other side of the receptacle 6. The infra-red source is combined with the receptacle 6 so that the wall 4 or an aperture in the wall 4 of the receptacle defines part of the bulb body 3 of the source.
