Abstract
Abstract A patch closure system for joining heat recoverable sheet material, especially for covering a substrate where the joined material is to be recovered around the substrate, comprises a layer of adhesive on one surface, a part of which is a pressure-sensitive adhesive and the remainder of which is a heat-activatable adhesive. The pressure-sensitive adhesive layer is of such an area and is placed such that, when the patch is placed over the overlap between the edges of the heat recoverable sheet material, the patch will continue to cover the overlap when the sheet material is recovered, even if the heat-activatable adhesive layer has not been used to attach the patch to the sheet material.

A method for joining the ends of heat recoverable sheet material comprising: (a) overlapping the ends of said sheet material; (b) disposing a patch over the line defined by the uppermost of the overlapping ends, said patch comprising a layer of cross-linked polymer and a layer of adhesive composition coated on one surface of said polymer layer, said adhesive layer comprising, over a part of said surface, a pressure-sensitive adhesive and, over the remainder of said surface, a heat-activatable adhesive, wherein that part of said layer which comprises_pressurs-sensitive adhesive is of sufficient area and is placed such that said line will be retained under said patch on heat recovery of said sheet material; (c) heating said patch to activate said heat-activatable adhesive; and (d) pressing said patch into close contact with said sheet material on either side of said line.
