Abstract

Abstract A laser optical system including a reading beam for reading optical data recorded in one or more tracks of a rotating disk optical recording medium. The disk includes a plurality of preformatted headers spaced along the track wherein each header includes first and second track following optical holes which are elongated in the direction of the track and disposed on opposite sides of the track center line in a staggered relationship along the track. Traversal of these track following holes by the reading beam produces a reflected beam which varies in a manner dependent upon the accuracy of positioning of the beam relative to the track center line. Up-down integration circuitry responsive to this reflected beam is used to produce a track following signal which is applied to a radial position control motor for maintaining the beam precisely on the track center line.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 169 words
In an optical data system, the combination comprising: an optical recording medium having at least one track containing a plurality of spaced header recordings disposed along the track, each header recording including first and second track following optical holes disposed on opposite sides of the track center line in a staggered relationship along the track; reading means including an optical reading radiation beam for reading optical holes in a track of said recording medium, said reading beam having an intensity such that the beam will not disturb the integrity of recorded optical holes; means providing for relative movement of said beam along a track; and track positioning means providing for relative movement of said beam transversely to a track; said reading means including control means responsive to the reflected reading beam obtained when the reading beam traverses said track following optical holes for deriving a track following signal which when applied to said track positioning means acts to maintain the beam on the center line of a selected track.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 169 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 75 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, wherein said beam is a laser beam forming a focused spot on said medium, and wherein the dimensions and locations of said track following optical holes are chosen in conjunction with the size of said focused spot so that during traversal thereof by said beam the reflected beam varies in a manner dependent upon the accuracy of positioning of said beam with respect to the track center line.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
The invention in accordance with claim 2, wherein said control means includes integration means for deriving said track following signal based upon the difference between the values obtained by integrating the reflected beam intensity detected during traversal of the portions of the track containing said first and second track following optical holes.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 72 words
The invention in accordance with claim 3, wherein said integration means includes up-down integrator circuitry which integrates up in response to the intensity of the reflected beam obtained when the portion of the track containing one of said track following holes is traversed and integrates down in response to the intensity of the reflected beam obtained when the portion of the track containing the other of said track following holes is traversed.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
The invention in accordance with claim 4, wherein said up-down integrator circuitry additionally operates to hold the difference obtained after traversal by said beam of the track portions containing said first and second track following optical holes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, wherein each of said optical holes is elongated in the direction parallel to said track.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 92 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, wherein said optical recording medium is an optical disk, wherein said means providing for relative movement of said beam along a track comprises means for rotating said disk relative to said beams, wherein said disk includes a plurality of radially spaced generally circumferential tracks, wherein said track positioning means provides for radially moving said beam relative to said disk for positioning said beam on a selected track, and wherein a plurality of said header recordings are spaced around each track.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 81 words
The invention in accordance with claim 7, wherein each header recording includes a timing optical hole of predetermined dimensions so as to be uniquely recognizable in said header recording, wherein said reading means includes means responsive to the reflected beam obtained when said timing optical hole is traversed by said reading beam for producing timing signals for said system, particular ones of which are applied to said control means for determining when the reading beam is traversing said track following holes.
Claim 10
