Abstract
Abstract An internal combustion engine having inlet valve ports (11, 13) closable by respective inlet valves. So that a high rate of flow of air within the inlet valve ports (11,13) can be maintained even at relatively low engine speeds, the engine has an adjustable device (19,44) movable in response to changes of engine speed whereby, at least at low engine speed, the air passing through each inlet valve port (11, 13) is caused to flow as a vortically moving mass.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
77 words
An internal combustion engine having an adjustable device, movable in response to changes of engine speed, whereby, at least at low engine speed, the air passing through each inlet valve port (11, 13) is caused to flow as a vortically moving mass so that a high rate of flow of air within the inlet valve ports (11, 13) is maintained even at relatively low engine speeds and throughout the periods when the respective inlet valves are closed.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
72 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 1, in which the inlet passages (10, 12) are interconnected by cross ports (22) in such a way that during the period when a particular inlet valve is closed, a bleed flow of air from its associated flow passage can pass to the flow passage of another valve which is open whereby the vortex flow of air within all the flow passages (10,12) is maintained.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
57 words
An internal combustion engine according to either one of the preceding claims, in which the adjustable device referred to is constituted by a movable slide arrangement (19) located adjacent the cylinder head inlet manifold face (23), the slide arrangement being adjustable in response to engine speed or in response to throttle depression or a combination of both.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
59 words
4 . An internal combustion engine according to claim 3, in which the slide arrangement includes a slidably mounted port controller (14, 16) capable of being moved across the or each air flow passage (10, 12) so that, when maximum restriction is being caused, the remaining narrow flow is along the side wall of the or each flow passage.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
85 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 3, having two inlet valves per cylinder, in which the slide arrangement includes a pair of port controllers (14, 15, 16, 17) for the or each pair of air flow passages (10, 10, 12, 12) capable of being moved towards or away from each other so that, when maximum restriction is being caused, the remaining narrow flow is through the gap between the or each pair of port controllers (14, 15, 16, 17) as the case may be.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
46 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 5, in which the or each pair of port controllers (14, 15, 16, 17) are connected together for equal and opposite movement by respective pairs of links (34, 34, 36, 36) connected to a controlling swivel arrangement (40, 42).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
56 words
An internal combustion engine according to any one of claims 3 to 6, in which the slide arrangement is interconnected with a balance pipe system, cutaways in the slide downstream face acting as variable throats and permitting a charge to pass into cavities behind the slides and then to other cylinders via an interconnecting pipe system.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
102 words
An internal combustion engine according to either one of claims 1 and 2, in which the adjustable device referred to is constituted by an adjustable vane element (44) located in the or each air flow passage (10,12), the or each adjustable vane element (44) being pivotally adjustable about the axis of a pivot pin (46) located adjacent a side wall of the air flow passage (10, 12), the arrangement being such that, when maximum restriction is being caused, the vane element extends almost completely across the air flow passage, the remaining narrow flow being along the opposite side wall of the passage.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
45 words
An internal combustion engine constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by Figure .1 or Figure 2 or Figures 3 to 5 or Figures 6 and 7 or Figures 8 and 9 of the accompanying drawings.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
45 words
An internal combustion engine constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by Figure .1 or Figure 2 or Figures 3 to 5 or Figures 6 and 7 or Figures 8 and 9 of the accompanying drawings.
