Abstract

Abstract An apparatus which controls lateral alignment of a belt (14 or 44) arranged to move along a predetermined path. The belt is supported by a pivoted roller (20 or 46). A member (118) having a pair of opposed, spaced flanges (114, 116) extending outwardly therefrom is mounted slidably on a shaft (112) extending outwardly from one end of the roller. A spring (130), contacting the flanged member (118), resiliently urges one of the flanges into continuous engagement with one side of the belt. Movement of the belt (114, 116) from the predetermined path slides the flanged member (118) so that one of the flanges (114, 116) frictionally rotates a dise (120) interposed there-between. Rotation of the disc (120) tilts the roller (20 or 46) restoring the belt to the predetermined path of movement.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
An apparatus for controlling the lateral alignment of a belt (14 or 44) arranged to move along a predetermined path, including means (20 or 46) for pivotably supporting the belt characterised by means (112 et al) for sensing lateral movement of the belt from the predetermined path and translating relative to said supporting means in response thereto, and means (120 et al), normally spaced from said sensing means (112 et al) during belt movement along the predetermined path, for tilting said supporting means (20 or 46) in response to said sensing means (120 et al) rotating said tilting means so as to return the belt (14 or 44) to the predetermined path of movement.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said supporting means (20 or 46) includes a frame 110, an elongated roller (20 or 46), and means (108), mounted pivotably on said frame (110), for rotatably holding said roller (20 or 46).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 87 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said sensing means (112 et al) includes a shaft (112) extending outwardly from one end of said roller, a member (118) mounted slidably on said shaft (112), a pair of opposed, spaced flanges (114, 116) extending outwardly from said member (118) with said tilting means (120) being interposed between said pair of flanges (114, 116), and means (130) for resiliently urging one (114) of said pair of flanges into contact with one edge of the belt (14 or 44).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
Apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said member (118) slides a pre-selected distance relative to said shaft (112) and thereafter remains stationary relative thereto so that one of said pair of flanges (I14, 116) prevents further lateral movement of the belt (14 or 44).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 81 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, in which said tilting means (120 et al) includes a disc (120) interposed between said pair of flanges (114, 116), said disc (120) being frictionally rotated by one of said pair of flanges (114, 116) to pivot said holding means (108) in one direction and being frictionally rotated in the opposite direction by the other of said pair of flanges (114, 116) to pivot said holding means (108) in the opposite direction.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 66 words
Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said tilting means includes a rod (122) secured to said disc and having a threaded portion (124) in threaded engagement with said holding means (108), and a stop (128) engaging the free end of said rod (122) to prevent translation thereof during rotation of said disc (120), said holding means (108) pivoting as said disc (120) rotates said rod (122).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 46 words
A reproducing machine, such as a electrophotographic printing machine, having a photoconductive belt (14) arranged to move in a predetermined path through a plurality of processing stations disposed therealong, including apparatus according to any preceding claim for controlling the lateral alignment of the photoconductive belt (14).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 52 words
A reproducing machine, such as an electrophotographic printing machine, having a document handling system comprising a belt (44) arranged to move in a predetermined path to transport a document to a processing station, including apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 6 for controlling the lateral alignment of the belt (44).
