Abstract

Abstract A master cylinder with a housing (20) forming a longitudinal bore (24) for receiving a pair of pistons (36, 38) and also forming an outer wall (26) defining a fluid reservoir (28), the housing further including a pair of compensation ports (100, 132) and at least one pair of outlet passages (66, 76) for connection with respective brake circuits, at least one of said outlet passages including a proportioning valve (64) received in a boss (60) protruding outwardly from the housing; According to this invention, the boss (60) has its axis directed tangentially with respect to the master cylinder housing (20) and cooperates with the outer wall (26) to divide the fluid reservoir (28) into a pair of separate cavities (84, 86); For use in automotive braking systems.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 221 words
A master cylinder with a housing (20) forming a longitudinal bore (24) for movably receiving a pair of pistons (36, 38), the housing also forming an outer wall (26) extending substantially normal to the axis of the longitudinal bore to define a fluid reservoir (28), and further including a pair of ports (100, 132) leading from the reservoir to the longitudinal bore, the pair of pistons cooperating with the housing to form a pair of pressure chambers (40, 42) normally communicating with the reservoir via the pair of ports, respectively, as well as at least one pair of outlet passages (66, 76) communicating the pair of pressure chambers with respective brake circuits in order to supply the latter with pressurized fluid when the pair of pistons are moved during braking and close the pair of ports, the housing still further including at least one boss (60) protruding radially outwardly from the housing and forming a bore (62) which defines a portion of one of said outlet passages and is used to receive a proportioning valve device (64) therein, characterized in that said boss (60) has its axis directed substantially tangentially with respect to the master cylinder housing (20) and cooperates with said outer wall (26) to divide the fluid reservoir (28) into a pair of separate fluid carrying cavities (84, 86).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 221 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
A master cylinder according to claim 1, characterized in that the boss (60) includes an integrally formed plate (83) which is connected to the outer wall (26) to further divide the fluid reservoir (28) into a pair of separate cavities (84, 86).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 49 words
A master cylinder according to claim 2, and wherein the outer wall (26) is substantially rectangular in cross-section to define a pair of sides and a pair of ends, characterized in that the boss (60) extends from one side (80) toward, but is spaced from the other side (82).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
A master cylinder according to claim 3, characterized in that the boss (60 ) extends to a position which is more than one half of the transverse width defined by said pair of sides (80, 82).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
A master cylinder according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the boss (60) further includes an opening (88) for communicating said one outlet passage (66) with one cavity (86) .of the fluid reservoir.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 86 words
A master cylinder according to any of claims 1 to 5, and wherein the housing still further includes another boss (70) protruding radially outwardly from the housing and forming a bore'which defines a portion of the other of said outlet passages and is used to receive a proportioning valve device (74) tharein, characterized in that said other boss (70) has its axis directed substantially tangentially with respect to the master cylinder housing (20) and in that said outer wall (26) extends outwardly from said other boss.
