Overvoltage protection for an optically controlled thyristor
Abstract
In the overvoltage protection circuit according to the invention, a light-ignitable thyristor (1) is connected in series with a breakover diode (2) and a light-emitting diode (7). The light emitting diode is connected to the control terminal of the thyristor (1) via an optical fiber (9). The breakover diode (2) becomes conductive when the voltage across the thyristor (1) exceeds a predetermined value. The current then flowing excites light emission from the light-emitting diode (7), whereby the thyristor (1) is ignited.
