Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a powder for use in dry sensitization for electroless metallization. The powder comprises finely powdered particles of a plastic material and 0.1 to 10 weight% of a sensitizing compound and 0.01 to 10 weight% of a surfactant. Upon melting down of the powder on a substrate a well-defined metallization edge results after subsequent electroless metallization.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 66 words
A powder for use in dry sensitization for electroless metallization containing a plastic material and a sensitizing compound, characterized in that it comprises finely powdered particles of the plastic material in which the sensitizing compound and surfactant comprise 0.1 - 10 weight% and 0.01 - 10 weight%, respectively, which powder upon melting down on a substrate results in a well-defined metallization edge after subsequent electroless metallization.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 66 words
A powder for use in dry sensitization for electroless metallization containing a plastic material and a sensitizing compound, characterized in that it comprises finely powdered particles of the plastic material in which the sensitizing compound and surfactant comprise 0.1 - 10 weight% and 0.01 - 10 weight%, respectively, which powder upon melting down on a substrate results in a well-defined metallization edge after subsequent electroless metallization.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A powder according to claim 1, characterized in that the sensitizing compound is a tin compound having tin in its +2 state.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 42 words
A powder according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the plastic material is a styrene acrylic copolymer resin, that the sensitizing compound is a hydrolyzed tin compound and that the surfactant is a mixture of glycerol mono-stearate and glycerol di-stearate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
A powder according to claim 3, characterized in that the hydrolyzed tin compound, determined as SnCl2 2H 2 0 constitutes 2 weight% and the mixture of glycerol mono-stearate and glycerol di-stearate constitutes 0.3 weight%, both with respect to the amount of the plastic material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A powder according to claims 1 to 4, characterized in that it.also contains a finely powdered magnetic material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 100 words
A process for the manufacture of a powder according to claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the plastic material in finely powdered form or manufactured by means of emulsion polymerisation is mixed with a solution or dispersion of 0.01 to 10 weight% surfactant, the ratio being with respect to the amount of plastic material, whereupon the sensitizing compound is added in an amount of 0.1 to 10 weight%, the ratio being with respect to the amount of plastic material, the sensitizing compound being precipitated onto each individual plastic particle, following adjustment of the acidity, said mixture being subsequently dried.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to claim 6, characterized in that the drying is performed by means of spray drying.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 58 words
Use of a powder according to claims 1 to 4 for dry sensitization for electroless metal deposition on a substrate surface, characterized in that the whole or part of the substrate surface to be metallized is supplied with the powder, which is subsequently melted down and activated for a process for electroless metallization that is known per se.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
The use according to claim 8, characterized in that the powder is applied electrostatically under influence of charges previously deposited on the substrate.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 27 words
The use according to claim 8, characterized in that the powder is applied magnetostatically under influence of poles that have previously been built up on the substrate.
