Abstract

Abstract A lancet injector is provided which has an elongated housing (12), a slidable lancet holder (16) in the housing, a compression spring (34) connected between the holder (16) and one end of the housing (20), and a control member (48) for moving the holder (16). The control member (48) is operable to move the lancet holder (16) to a latched retracted position against the force of the spring, release the holder so that it moves linearly under the force of the spring and inertia to a skin piercing position and then back to a neutral position in which the spring is in a free length condition.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 166 words
A lancet injector characterised by an elongate housing (12), a lancet holder (16) slidable in the elongate housing and adapted to have a lancet (60) releasably connected thereto for piercing the skin, spring means (34) in the housing, one end of the spring means engaging the holder (16) and the other end engaging a proximal end portion of the housing (12), control means (48) connected to the holder (16) for moving the holder, the control means (48) being movable to move the holder linearly against the force of the spring means (34) to a releasable retracted position in which the spring means (34) is in a compressed condition, the control means (48) being movable to release the holder (16) from the retracted position so that the force of the spring means (34) and the inertia of the holder (16) when released from the retracted position is adapted to move the holder linearly toward a distal end portion of the housing (12) to a lancet piercing position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 166 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 98 words
An injector as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the holder (16) is movable distally from the retracted position to a neutral position wherein the spring means (34) is in its free length neutral force condition, the inertia of the holder when released from the retracted position being adapted to effect movement of the holder (16) linearly distally beyond the neutral position to the lancet piercing position in which the spring means (34) is in a tension condition, the holder (16) being movable proximally from the piercing to the neutral position by the force of the spring means (34).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 96 words
An injector as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein the control means (48) is movable to move the holder (16) to a releasable lancet access position wherein the spring means (34) is in a tension condition and a portion of the holder (16) extends distally beyond the distal end of the housing (12) for releasably connecting a lancet (60) to the holder, the control means (48) being movable to release the holder (16) from the access position to allow the force of the spring means (34) to move the holder (16) to the neutral position.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 84 words
An injector as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the housing (12) has a slot (50) through its sidewall, the control means (48) extends through the sidewall to the exterior of said housing, the slot (50) having a first wall portion (69, 70) engageable with the control means to latch the holder (16) in the retracted position and the slot (50) having a second wall portion distally of said first wall portion engageable with the control member to latch the holder in the access position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
An injector as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the spring means (34) further biases the control member arcuately toward a longitudinal side of the slot.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
An injector as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims which includes a removable cap (24) connected to the distal end of the housing and having an opening (25) therethrough for movement of a needle point of a lancet in the lancet piercing position
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 43 words
An injector as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein one end of the spring means (34) is secured to the holder(16) and the other end of the spring means is secured to the proximal end portion of the housing (12).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
An injector as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the spring means is a coil spring.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 19 words
An injector as claimed in Claim 8 wherein the coil spring is the sole functional spring in the injector.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
An injector as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the holder (16) includes a lancet receiving sleeve (30) at the distal end thereof for frictionally receiving a lancet.
