Abstract

Abstract The invention concerns the synthesis of methanol from lower hydrocarbons. The C1-3 hydrocarbons are subjected to partial oxidation over a catalyst in the presence of oxygen and steam, part of the carbon dioxide is removed from the effluent gas to adjust the ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and the resulting gas is converted to methanol in a steam generating reactor. The over all economy of the process is clearly better than that of conventional processes utilising a steam reformer.

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 239 words
Process for the preparation of methanol by converting a C l - 3 hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixture into a gas mixture containing CO and H 2 and converting this at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a suitable catalyst into methanol, this process being characterized in that the hydrocarbon is converted with 0 2 and H 2 0 by partial oxidation in the presence of a suitable catalyst at a temperature of between 800 and 1200 °C and a pressure of between 20 and 100 bar into a gas mixture substantially consisting of C0, C0 2 and H 2 , such an amount of C0 2 is removed from this gas mixture by absorption in a suitable medium that the H 2 /2 CO + 3 C0 2 molar ratio is between 0.95 and 1.05, and this gas mixture is supplied to a reactor in which, at a temperature of between 240 °C and 320 °C and a pressure of between 40 and 100 bar in the presence of a suitable catalyst, it is converted into methanol, and the methanol, after cooling and expansion to approximately atmospheric pressure, is separated off and sent to a purification section, the energy released in the partial oxidation and in the methanol synthesis being applied for the generation of steam in an amount sufficient to meet the energy requirements of an oxygen plant supplying the oxygen required for the partial oxidation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 239 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 54 words
Process according to claim 1, characterized in that the partial oxidation is carried out at a temperature of between 900 °C and 1100 °C and a pressure of between 30 bar and 60 bar, at a molar ratio between water and carbon in the feed of between 1.0 : 1 and 2.5 : 1.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
Process according to claims 1-2, characterized in that a molar ratio between water and carbon in the feed of between 1.2 : 1 and 2.0 :1 is applied.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 81 words
Process according to claims 1-3, characterized in that part of the C0 2 is removed from the gas stream by scrubbing the gas at about the pressure of the methanol synthesis and a temperature of between 15 °C and 40 °C with crude methanol from the synthesis reactor and the C0 2 is subsequently separated off by expansion of the C0 2 -loaded methanol to approximately atmospheric pressure, after which at least part of the methanol is subjected to further purification.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 66 words
Process according to claims 1-4, characterized in that a gas mixture is supplied to the reactor which contains between 19 and 24 % by volume of CO, between 3 and 10 % by volume of C0 2 and between 62 and 74 % by volume of H 2 , at an H 2/ 2 CO + 3 C0 2 molar ratio of between 1.00 and 1.04.
