Abstract
Abstract An endomentrial sampling device (Fig. 1) comprises a handle (12) and a specimen collection probe (14) which has at least one groove (22) adjacent the distal end thereof, the groove (22) having a scraping edge formed by the peripheral surface of the probe (14) and a sidewall of the groove (22), the sidewall intersecting the peripheral surface at an acute angle. A plurality of grooves (22) may be provided, each having scraping edges. The handle (12) has means (46, 52) for determining by feel the orientation of the probe when inserted in the uterus of a patient.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
63 words
An endometrial sampling device comprising a specimen collection probe and a handle characterised in that the probe (14) has a groove (22) adjacent the distal end thereof, the groove (22) having a scraping edge (30) formed by the peripheral surface of the probe (14) and a sidewall (24) of the groove (22), the sidewall (24) intersecting the peripheral surface at an acute angle.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
A device as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that the groove (22) extends generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the probe (14).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
59 words
A device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterised in that the groove (22) has a bottom wall (28) and axially spaced opposed proximal and distal sidewalls (26,24) and each of the sidewalls (26,24) intersects the outer periphery of the probe (14) to provide a sharp scraping edge (32,30) which extends circumferentially in a smoothly curving configuration.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
28 words
A device as claimed in Claim 3, characterised in that the sidewalls (26,24) and the bottom wall (28) of the groove (22) connect to form an arcuate surface.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
29 words
A device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the scaping edge (30) or edges (32,30) extend peripherally for greater than 1 mm.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
27 words
A device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the probe is made of flexible plastic and is solid in cross-section.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
22 words
A device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 6, characterised in that probe (14) is generally circular in cross-section.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
86 words
B. A device as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that the probe (14) has at least one groove (22) on each of the opposite sides thereof extending normal to the longitudinal axis of the probe, each of the grooves (22) having a bottom wall (28) and axially spaced, opposed proximal and distal sidewalls (32,30), each of the distal sidewalls (30) intersecting the outer periphery of the probe (14) at an acute angle to provide a sharp scraping edge at the periphery of the probe (14).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
149 words
A device as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that the probe (14) is elongate, solid in cross-section and made of flexible plastic, and has at least one groove (22) on each of the opposite sides thereof, the groove (22) extending normal to the longitudinal axis (37) of the probe (14), each of the grooves (22) having a bottom wall (28) and axially spaced, opposed proximal and distal sidewalls (32,30), each of said sidewalls (32,30) intersecting the outer periphery of the probe (14) at an acute angle to provide a sharp scraping edge (32,30) at the periphery of the probe (14), the sidewalls (32,30) and bottom Walls (28) of each of said grooves (22) connecting to form an arcuate surface Which extends for more than 180° at the longitudinal centre of the groove and the longitudinal axis (37) of the probe (14) is substantially tangential to said arcuate surface.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
48 words
A device as claimed in Claim 9, characterised in that, the probe has a handle (12) connected thereto said handle (12) having means (48,50,52) for indicating by feel the orientation of the probe (14) relative to the handle when the probe is in the uterus of a patient.
