Abstract

Abstract Let us assume that a new file or spatially related data is to be created from an existing file stored in the text processing system, and the new file include at least one column of data from the existing file, which should appear in a different location in the new file. The repositioning of the column in the new file is achieved in the text processing system by the operator performing conventional text editing move operations on the column titles as they are displayed as a portion of the header frame of the existing file. The data generated by moving a field title in the header from its stored position to a new position is stored in the system and employed in generating the new file records, with each record being modified in accordance with the data stored, and is employed in displaying records from the existing file in the modified form. The improved method may also be embodied in a simple editing operation of an existing file.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 128 words
Method for assisting an operator of an interactive text processing system in entering instructional data which define a desired rearrangement of fields of spatially related data in an existing file characterized by the following steps : (a) displaying to the operator the header portion of the existing file as a horizontal row of named fields with a cursor disposed at a predetermined position in said horizontal row; (b) performing an edit operation including operator directed cursor movements representative of the fields involved in said edit operation; and (c) storing the editing data reflecting the specific edit operation and the field location in said header involved therewith as defined by said cursor movements, whereby each record of the existing file is displayed in accordance with the stored instructional data.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 128 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
Method according to claim 1, characterized in that said edit operation is a conventional text edit move operation and said cursor movements specifies the movement of one field from its current position to a new position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
Method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that said edit operation is a conventional text edit delete operation and said cursor movements identify the field to be deleted.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 100 words
Method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that : said spatially related data are stored in said system in a vector format and are converted from said vector format to conventional text stream data for displaying and editing, said system includes a microprocessor which processes both conventional text data and spatially related data, and said editing data reflecting said specific edit operation and the location in said header involved therewith are stored in said microprocessor to permit said microprocessor to modify each row vector of the existing file in accordance with said stored editing data.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
Method according to claim 4, characterized in that each record in said existing file of spatially related data is stored in a vector format and said method involves the further step of converting portions of said vector formatted data into conventional text data, which portions are determined by said stored instructional data.
