Abstract
Abstract Dental cements and adhesives are provided which are polymerizable with visible light. Such adhesives may be applied in thinner films than heretofore possible and demonstrate superior physical properties. Processes employing such materials are disclosed wherein the polymerization of the adhesive is accomplished by transmitting visible light through tooth or other structures to effect the adhesion.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
162 words
A method for adhering a first article to a second article, at least one of said articles being able to transmit visible light, comprising: applying a layer of an adhesive composition to a surface of said first article, contacting the coated surface with a surface of said second article such that said surfaces of the respective articles are separated by and in contact with said layer of adhesive, said adhesive comprising a binder resin, a diluent monomer, an initiator for initiating polymerization of said adhesive by exposure to visible light, and at least one filler material, and exposing to visible light at least a portion of the assembly of said first and second articles separated by said adhesive layer to permit visible light to be transmitted through at least one of said articles and onto said adhesive layer to initiate polymerization of said adhesive composition and thereby adhere said surfaces of said articles to one another through the resulting polymerized adhesive layer.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein one of said articles is a natural or artificial tooth.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of said articles is a glass.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of said articles is porcelain.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of said articles is a polymeric material capable of transmitting visible light.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
50 words
The method of claims 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 wherein the adhesive composition comprises by weight at least 20% of an inorganic filler and a resin component comprising a binder resin, a diluent monomer, and a photosensitizing system, said photosensitizing system comprising an alpha-diketone and an amine reducing agent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
72 words
The method of claim 6 wherein said binder resin is selected from the group consisting of acrylated polyesters, acrylated polyesters reacted with isocyanates, and hydroxyalkyl acrylic species reacted with isocyanates, said alpha-diketone is selected from the group consisting of camphoroquinone, benzil, biacetyl, 9,10-phenanthrene quinone, and napthoquinone, said amine is selected from the group consisting of N-alkyl-dialkanolamine and trialkanolamine, and said fillers are selected from the group consisting of inorganic glasses and silica.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
28 words
The method of claims 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 wherein said visible light comprises electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths of from about 400 nm. to about 500 nm.
