Abstract

Abstract A transaction execution system is provided in which key initiated transaction requests at a terminal remote from and in communication with a host data processing system are processed at the terminal under the selective control of the host. Each active transaction key at the terminal keyboard is assigned one of three different states by a financial institution table 100. The table 100 provides keyboard customization by selecting one of a plurality of different groups of key states for the different keys arrived at by combining the key states in a custom key set table 106 with the states in a base key set table 104 in response to information from a credit card entered by a consumer. Transactions requested by keys assigned an active, standard state are processed at the terminal without further data input being required of the consumer. Transactions requested by keys having an active, data entry state are also handled within the terminal and with the additional consumer entered data required to complete the transaction being requested by and received by the terminal using sets of messages previously stored in the terminal by the host data processing system. Transactions designated by an interactive key state take place within and involve interactive communication between both the terminal and the host, enabling the responses and other communications generated by the host in connection with a transaction for a particular customer to be customized and providing for greater and more varied transactions including such things as bill paying in which funds are transferred between accounts in the host. Message storage within the terminal and communication of messages to the terminal from the host are greatly simplified by storage of segments of messages at the terminal. Frequently repeated phrases can then be incorporated into a message as it is readied for display at the terminal by storing the phrases as segments and thereafter simply identifying them in message definitions communicated to the terminal from the host or stored at the terminal.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 147 words
A terminal for use in a transaction execution system which is shared by a plurality of institutions and which includes at least one terminal remote from and in communication with a host data processing system, said terminal being characterised by comprising: means operable by a customer of a specific one of said institutions for selecting a transaction step; segment storage means for storing a plurality of message segments; message storage means for storing a communicated message, said communicated message selectively including one or more message segment identifiers; execution means for executing a selected transaction step including means for generating from a communicated message pertaining to said selected transaction step one or more display messages by replacing each message segment identifier with a corresponding message segment selected from said segment storage means by said message segment identifier; and display means for displaying said display messages to said customer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 147 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
A terminal as claimed in claim 1, further comprising means operable by said customer for entering customer selected data; and being further characterised in that said communicated message further selectively includes a data marker and said execution means is reponsive to said data marker for inserting said customer selected data into a corresponding display message.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 93 words
A terminal as claimed in claim 1 or 2, further characterised in that said message storage means includes means for storing a plurality of communicated messages received from said host data processing system for each of said plurality of institutions; and in that the terminal further includes means operable by said customer for entering institution indicia identifying said specific one of said institutions; and in that said execution means is responsive to said institution indicia for selecting from said message storage means one or more communicated messages pertaining to the selected transaction step.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 164 words
A terminal as claimed in claim 1 further characterised by comprising: means operable by said customer for selecting a transaction step and for entering institution indicia identifying said specific one of said institutions; communication port means for communicating with said host data processing system and for receiving said communicated messages from said host data processing system: message storage means for storing a plurality of communicated messages for each of a plurality of said institutions; and means responsive to said institution indicia (a) to selection by said customer of a first transaction step designated by said specific one of said institutions as a data entry transaction step for selecting a communicated message from said message storage means, and (b) to selection by said customer of a second transaction step designated by said specific one of said institutions as an interactive transaction step for generating an interactive request message for communication to said host data processing system requesting an interactive reponse message containing a communicated message.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 180 words
A transaction execution system which is shared by a plurality of institutions and which includes a plurality of terminals, each remote from and in communication with a common host data processing system, characterised in that the host data processing system comprises: means for generating communicated messages, each communicated message selectively including one or more message segment identifiers; means for communicating said communicated messages to said terminals; and each terminal comprises: means operable by a customer of a specific one of said institutions for selecting a transaction step; segment storage means for storing a plurality of message segments; communication port means for communicating with and for receiving communicated messages from said host data processing system: message storage means for storing communicated messages; execution means for executing a selected transaction step including means for generating from communicated messages pertaining to said selected transaction step one or more display messages by replacing each message segment identifier with a message segment selected from said segment storage means by said each message segment identifier: and display means for displaying said display messages to said customer.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 48 words
A system as claimed in claim 5, further characterised in that said execution means responds to selection by said customer of a transaction step designated by said specific one of said institutions as a data entry transaction step by obtaining said communicated message from said message storage means.
