Abstract

Abstract A transmission system includes a control system to control a fluid actuated clutch (16) and movable sheaves (68, 152). The clutch includes a deeply grooved pattern (345) to provide adequate cooling with low pressure oil before its return to sump and comprises a central disc with opposed surfaces (336), a resilient material layer affixed to each surface (341, 343) and a friction material layer (338, 340) affixed to each resilient layer.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 117 words
A fluid cooled clutch including a generally annular laminated clutch disc assembly having an inner and an outer periphery which disc assembly comprises a central disc with opposed surfaces, a resilient material layer affixed to each surface, a friction material layer affixed to each resilient layer characterized in that each resilient layer (341,343) is at least as thick as the friction material layer (338,340), and a pattern of grooves (345) is provided in the friction material layer, which grooves extend completely through the friction material layer and through substantially all of the resilient layer, thus providing a path for coolant fluid flow in the laminated structure which is substantially greater than that of a grooved friction layer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 117 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 98 words
A fluid cooled clutch as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that a plurality of channels (351) is provided in the friction material layer (338,340) and resilient material (341,343) layer of a depth substantially equal to the depth of the grooves (345), which channels extend from the inner periphery (355) to the outer periphery (357) of the friction material layer, with each channel tapering from a given dimension at said inner periphery to a dimension smaller than the given dimension at the outer periphery, to transfer fluid to the grooves along the radial extent of the disc assembly.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A fluid cooled clutch as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that said grooves (345) define islands (353) of exposed friction material between said grooves, which islands of friction material are substantially at least 0.26 square centimeters in surface area.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 77 words
A fluid cooled clutch as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the clutch is a slippable, fluid-actuated starting clutch mounted in a continuously variable belt drive transmission mechanism having an input pulley and output pulley and a drive belt engaged therewith, and including forward-reverse gear selection means, said starting clutch, when engaged, connecting an output pulley shaft to said forward-reverse gear selection means, whereby the drive belt can continuously rotate both the input and output pulleys.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A fluid cooled clutch as claimed in Claim 4, characterized in that said clutch slips to prevent transmission of torsional vibrations below the lugging limit or stall point in either overdrive or underdrive.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 36 words
A fluid cooled clutch as claimed in Claim 4, characterized in that said clutch is programmable (22), either electronically or hydraulically, in conjunction with a spring release mechanism (308), thereby adjusting and resetting clutch stall point.
