Abstract

Abstract An electromagnetic radiation detection system comprises a shield (17) for limiting the radiation received by electromagnetic energy detectors (14) to the radiation provided to the detectors by the optics within the system. The shield comprises a member of etchable glass having apertures (19) formed therein, the position of the aperture edges being in predetermined relation to the edges of the detectors for shielding the detectors from electromagnetic radiation generated outside the field of view of the optics. A method for fabricating the shield provides covering of the glass member by a photoresist pattern, etching the glass and removing the photoresist.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 83 words
An electromagnetic radiation detection system comprising a shield for limiting the radiation received by electro-5 magnetic energy detectors to the radiation provided to the detectors by the optics within the system, characterized in that the shield comprises a member (17) of etchable glass having apertures (19) formed therein, the position of the aperture edges being in pre-0 determined relation to the edges of the detectors (14) for shielding the detectors from electromagnetic radiation generated outside the field of view of the optics (36).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
System according to claim 1, characterized in that the detectors (14) as viewed from the optics (36) have a particular geometrical configuration and that the apertures (19) as viewed from the optics have a matching configuration.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
System according to claim 2, characterized in that the shield surface (33) viewed by the optics (36) and the walls (32) of the apertures (19) are coated with an absorbent material for absorbing electromagnetic radiation. 5
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
System according to claim 3, characterized in that the walls (32) are orthogonal to the plane of the detector array.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
System according to claim 4, characterized in that the typical thickness of the walls (32) is 75 to 125 µm.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
System according to claim 1, characterized in that the detectors are infrared detectors (14).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 76 words
A method of fabricating a shield for the system according to claim 1, characterized by forming, on a member of etchable glass, a photoresist pattern, the photoresist (31) protecting areas (33) of the glass where supporting walls (32) of the shield (17) will be located, the glass being exposed where the apertures (19) will be located, the photoresist pattern defining the shape of each aperture; etching the glass to form the apertures; and removing the photoresist.
