Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 106 words
A water soluble addition copolymer of acrylamide and an N-substituted acrylamide suitable for use as a thickening agent for aqueous systems, whereby: (i) the copolymer is prepared by addition polymerisation of a monomer charge comprising on a weight basis at least 50% acrylamide from 0.01 to 50% N-substituted acrylamide, and from 0 to 49.99% of one or more other vinyl monomers. (ii) the substituent on the N-substituted acrylamide is a hydrocarbyl group of at least 6 carbon atoms, or is such a group attached to the nitrogen atom via a polyoxyalkylene chain; and (iii) the copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of greater than 30,000.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 106 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 67 words
A copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the N-substituted acrylamide is a compound of the formula wherein R, is a group and R 2 is H or a group, where R 3 and R 5 are each H or CH 3 , R 4 and R 6 are each hydrocarbyl groups of 6 or more carbon atoms, and n and m are each 0 or an integer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A copolymer according to claim 2, wherein R 2 is H and R 4 is C 6 ―C 36 alkyl.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
A copolymer according to claim 3, where R 4 is C 8 -C 18 alkyl.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
A copolymer according to claim 3 or 4, where n is zero.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A copolymer according to claim 3 or 4, where n is an integer of from 1-40.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
A copolymer according to any one of claims 2 to 6, where the monomer charge contains from 0.05 to 20% by weight of the N-substituted acrylamide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
A copolymer according to any one of claims 2 to 7, wherein the weight average molecular weight is from 50,000 to 1,000,000.
Claim 10

Claim 11
Dependent Claim 25 words
A copolymer according to claim 9, wherein said other monomer(s) is or are selected from N-vinylpyrrolidone, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and methyacrylic acid.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
An aqueous composition containing, as a thickening agent, copolymer as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 12 words
An aqueous composition according to claim 11, which is a multiphase system.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 32 words
An aqueous composition according to claim 12, comprising an aqueous emulsion polymer latex containing from 0.1 to 15% by weight of the thickening agent, based on the weight of the emulsion polymer.
Claim 15
