Abstract

Abstract An EVOH copolymer blend extrudable to produce films of uniform caliper and excellent oxygen barrier properties is compounded from 80 to 95 percent of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer resin and 5 to 20 percent of a plasticizing agent (percentages being by weight of the blend). Aromatic sulfonamides are desirably utilized as plasticizers, and superior composite films including a layer of the plasticized EVOH are produced by melt extrusion processes. The EVOH has a molecular weight range of 15,000 to 30,000 and a melting point range of 163 to 191°C. The plasticizer, which is capable of intermolecular hydrogen bonding with the EVOH, has a melting point below 204°C.
