Abstract

Abstract There is described a process for preparing a dihydroxy compound of the formula or a physiologically acceptable ether or ester thereof, or a physiologically acceptable acid addition salt of the dihydroxy compound or of the ether or ester thereof; wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently C 1 -C 4 alkyl, or combine to form C 4 -C 6 polymethylene, -CH 2 CH(CH 3 )CH 2 CH 2 - or -(CH 2 ) 2 0(CH 2 ) 2 -; which process comprises acylating a compound of the formula in the presence of aluminum chloride or aluminum bromide with an acylating agent of the formula wherein R 4 is chloro or bromo; and reacting the product with a sulfur compound chosen from the group consisting of methionine and compounds of the formula wherein X is hydrogen or unbranched C 1 -C 4 alkyl, and Y is C 1 -C 4 alkyl or phenyl.
