Abstract

Abstract A combined endoscope and ultrasonic diagnostic device for the examination of a body. an ultrasonic probe tip (23) being mounted in an insertion sheath (21) to transmit and receive ultrasonic waves for the diagnostic investigation of internal organs and an endoscope (27) being provided to observe the body cavity interior. In previous such combined diagnosing devices a driving means is required to drive an ultrasonic oscillator or scanning mirror provided within the probe tip, and the provision of a driving shaft together with signal wiring and a light guide connected to a light source means to transmit an illuminating light to the endoscope results in a cumbersome unit difficult to employ in diagnostic operations within a body cavity. Contact with an internal organ that is to be studied may also be obstructed. depending on the arranging positions and methods. Therefore. the proposed device has a small and light hand grip (29) provided with flexible couplings (33. 38) arranged and positioned so as not to obstruct operation, and thus improve operatabihty.

A combined endoscope and ultrasonic diagnostic device wherein the endoscope is provided with illuminating light from a light source via a flexible light guide and contained within an insertion sheath together with an ultrasonic wave probe tip for inserting directly into a body cavity and transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves to facilitate diagnosis of an internal organ or the like within the body cavity, characterised in that the probe tip is provided with an ultrasonic oscillator and a scanning mirror and connected via a signal lead and with a rotary drive shaft for the mirror, these being connected to the end of an elongate insertion sheath, the endoscope being mounted within the insertion sheath, which has a grip provided at its outer end and being connected to a separate driving means for the oscillator and/or scanning mirror coupled to the grip via a flexible cable.

A device as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the direction of the connection of the flexible cable to the grip and the direction of the connection of the light guide to the endoscope mutually coincide with respect to the grip in a common lateral direction.

A device as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that a rotary drive for rotating and driving the oscillator or mirror within the probe tip is provided in a flexible cable between the grip and the driving means and also contains electrical signal wiring for the oscillator drive and output signals.

A device as claimed in Claim 5, characterised in that the flexible cable is provided with a respective detachable coupling at each end of the flexible cable.
