Abstract

Abstract A fluidised combustion bed (12) is divided by a hollow baffle (8) into two regions (14, 15) which are fluidised at respectively higher and lower fluidising velocities. Exhaust gases and elutriated particles leaving the region (14) pass into the freeboard (10) and around the baffle (8), the particles being deposited after such passage into the region (15) and the gases flowing into the baffle (8) for exhaust.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 148 words
A fluidised bed combustor includes a horizontally elongate body (2) for containing a fluidised bed (12) of particulate material, a gas permeable support (4) on which in use the bed (12) is supported, a plenum (6) defined between the support (4) and the base of the body, the plenum (6) being divided into at least two parts (7, 9), an exhaust gas outlet (21) at one end of the body, characterised by a hollow elongate baffle (8) extending within the body (2) longitudinally thereof and communicating with the gas outlet (21), an inlet (20) provided in the baffle (8), the baffle (8) being disposed within the body (2) such that in use at least a lower part thereof extends into the bed (12) of particulate material thereby to define at least two regions (14, 15) therein corresponding to the at least two parts (7, 9) of the planum.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A fluidised bed combustor according to claim 3, characterised in that the horizontally elongate body (2) is cylindrical.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A fluidised bed combustor according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the hollow elongate baffle (8) is provided with cooling passages (23) at least in the lower part thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 59 words
A fluidised bed combustor according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that a relatively upper part (17) of the baffle (8) is spaced from the defining wall of the body (2) to provide a passage (18) for the flow of gas and entrained particles from one side of the baffle (8) to the other side thereof.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 140 words
A method of operating a fluidised bed combustor is characterised by the steps of establishing a bed (12) of particulate material in at least two regions (14, 15) in a hollow elongate body (2}, the regions (14, 15) being defined by a hollow elongate baffle (8) extending into the bed (12) and the freeboard (10) thereabove, fluidising the regions (14, 15) at different rates, causing gases and entrained bed particles to pass in the freeboard (10) from one region (14) of the bed (12) around the baffle (8) to the other region (15) thereof, the gases passing into the baffle (8) for exhaust and the entrained bed particles being deposited in the other region (15) of the bed (12) fluidised at a relatively lower rate, and causing circulation of bed material between the regions (14, 15) of the bed (12).
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method according to claim 5, characterised in that the fluidised bed (12) is divided into a relatively larger region (14) and a relatively smaller region (15).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to claim 6 characterised in that fluidising gas is passed at a rate just sufficient to cause fluidisation of the bed material in the relatively smaller region (15).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to claim 7, characterised in that fluidising gas is passed into the relatively larger region (14) at a higher rate than that for the relatively smaller region (15).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method according to claim 8, characterised in that elutriated particles of bed material are caused to pass from the relatively larger region (14) of the bed around the baffle (8) and are deposited in the relatively smaller region (15).
Claim 12
