Abstract
Abstract A paper currency not containing a magnetic strip is transported along a path adjacent a magnetic detector. This magnetic detector comprises a magnet and a magnetic resistance element located in the magnetic field generated by the magnet. When the magnetic strip passes through this magnetic field, the change in the field causes a change in the resistance of the element. Circuitry detects the change in resistance of the element. By checking the change in resistance of the element, and comparing it with a predetermined value, the existence or non-existence of the magnetic strip can be determined.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
80 words
A device for detecting a magnetic strip embedded in a sheet of paper comprising transporting means for transporting said sheet along a path; characterised in the provision of means for generating a magnetic field which passes through said path; a variable magnetic resistance means having a resistance which is dependent on the magnetic field received from said generating means; and means for detecting the resistance variation of said magnetic resistance element when said magnetic strip passes through said magnetic field.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
80 words
A device for detecting a magnetic strip embedded in a sheet of paper comprising transporting means for transporting said sheet along a path; characterised in the provision of means for generating a magnetic field which passes through said path; a variable magnetic resistance means having a resistance which is dependent on the magnetic field received from said generating means; and means for detecting the resistance variation of said magnetic resistance element when said magnetic strip passes through said magnetic field.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said magnetic field generating means is positioned on one side of said path and said variable magnetic resistance means is positioned on the other side of said path in alignment with said generating means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
29 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said magnetic field generating means and said magnetic resistance element are adjacently positioned on one side of said path.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
28 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, characterised in that said generating means and said resistance means are contained within a housing of non-magnetic material.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
37 words
A device as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the transporting means is adapted to transport currency notes with the magnetic strip in each note extending transverse to the direction of transportation along the path.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
53 words
A device as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that said magnetic field generating means and said variable magnetic resistance means are aligned and extend in a direction transverse to said path, and wherein said generating means and said resistance means have lengths which are at least as long as said magnetic strip.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
39 words
A device as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that the transporting means is adapted to transport currency notes with the magnetic strip in each note parallel to the direction of transportation along the path.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
69 words
A device as claimed in claim 7, in which the magnetic field generating means and the magnetic resistance means are positioned non-centrally of the path to encounter the magnetic strip of a currency note passed along said path and characterised in that further magnetic field generating means and a variable magnetic resistance means are positioned to encounter the magnetic strip of an inverted currency note passed along the path.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
65 words
A device as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that said detecting means comprises a converting means for converting the resistance variation of said variable magnetic resistance means into an output signal; a filter, coupled to said converting means for passing only the high-frequency components of said output signal; and a comparator means for converting the output of said filter into a binary signal.
Claim 11
