Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 66 words
A method for producing iron monoxide which comprises: (a) heating a metallic iron composition, comprising at least about 95 wt.% iron, to a temperature of at least about 540°C; and (b) contacting the heated iron composition with steam; wherein said iron composition is substantially free of (aa) protective oxide forming elements and (bb) metal components which are volatile at the temperature employed in step (a) above.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 66 words
A method for producing iron monoxide which comprises: (a) heating a metallic iron composition, comprising at least about 95 wt.% iron, to a temperature of at least about 540°C; and (b) contacting the heated iron composition with steam; wherein said iron composition is substantially free of (aa) protective oxide forming elements and (bb) metal components which are volatile at the temperature employed in step (a) above.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to-claim 1 wherein the iron composition contains at least 98 wt.% iron.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 21 words
A method according to either of claims 1 and 2 wherein the temperature employed is from about 550°C to about 900°C.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method according to claim 3 wherein the temperature employed is from about 700 to 800°C.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 33 words
A method for producing carbon filaments comprising dissociating one or more carbon-containing gases in the presence of iron monoxide at a temperature from about the dissociation temperature of the gas to about 800°C.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 33 words
A method for producing carbon filaments comprising dissociating one or more carbon-containing gases in the presence of iron monoxide at a temperature from about the dissociation temperature of the gas to about 800°C.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method according to claim 5 wherein the carbon-containing gas is carbon monoxide, an acetylene, an olefin, a paraffin or a mixture thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method according to claim 6 wherein the carbon-containing gas is one or more C 2 to C 4 paraffins.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 22 words
A method according to any one of claims 5 to 7 wherein the temperature employed is from about 700°C to about 800°C.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 30 words
A method according to any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein the iron oxide has been produced by the method according to any one of claims 1 to 4.
