Abstract

Abstract The pressure outputs of a power steering control valve (20) are fed either to hydraulic cylinders (50-56) (or servos) or to chambered elastomeric insulator units in order to produce, in case of the rear wheels, a bias which opposes a lateral force produced during cornering to prevent the rear wheels from being subjected to "compliance steering", or in order to induce, in case of front wheels (14), same to turn through an angle slightly greater than intended by the driver to either prevent "compliance steering" or increase same to improve vehicle handling when cornering, respectively.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 128 words
Compliance steer control system for a vehicle having steerable front wheels mounted to said vehicle through a front suspension arrangement, a power steering system associated with said front wheel through a linkage arrangement, which power steering includes a source of hydraulic pressure, a hydraulic servo having first and second chambers, a control valve responsive to the rotation of a steering wheel of the vehicle for selectively pressurizing said first and second chambers, and rear wheels mounted to said vehicle by a rear suspension arrangement which includes elastomeric mounting members, characterized by a system responsive to the pressurization of said first and second chambers (30,34) for producing a bias which tends to vary the orientation of said front wheels (14) and/or said rear wheels with respect to said vehicle.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 128 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
A system as claimed in claim 1, characterized by chambered means (50-56; 64;64';79;98) fluidly communicated with said control valve (20) for producing said bias which acts on said front wheels (14) and/or said rear wheels, respectively, said bias varying with the pressure fed thereto from said control valve (20).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 63 words
A system as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that said chambered means takes the form of first and second pairs of extensible hydraulic cylinders (50-56) which are connected to said rear suspension (46) in a manner to produce said bias which at least neutralizes the effect of a side force which acts on said rear wheels when the vehicle traverses a corner.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 46 words
A system as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that said chambered means takes the form of a hydraulic servo (79,98) which is operatively connected to said front wheel (14) in manner to increase the angle through which it is turned by said power steering (12).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
A system as claimed in claim 4, characterized in that said servo (79) is operatively connected to said front suspension (89).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 59 words
A system as claimed in claim 4, characterized in that said servo (98) is connected to a movable housing (100) which houses said power steering (12), said housing (100) being mounted to said vehicle through elastomeric means (102) and adapted to be axially movable in the lateral direction of the vehicle via the distortion of said elastomeric means (102).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 40 words
A system as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that said chambered means takes the form of a chambered elastomeric insulator (64; 64'), said chambered elastomeric insulator (64;64') being operatively connected to said front wheels (14) and/or said rear wheels.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 41 words
A system as claimed in claim 7, characterized in that said chambered elastomeric insulator (64;64') is used to connect, in part, at least one of said front suspension (89), said rear suspension (46) and said power steering (12) to said vehicle.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 99 words
A system as claimed in claims 7 or 8, characterized in that said chambered elastomeric insulator (64;64') is disposed within a collar (76) fixed to said front or rear suspension and comprises two semi-cylindrical casing members (68), each of which is provided with a connection nipple (74), and an elastomeric insulator body (66) which is fastened to the vehicle chassis, said casing members (68) being secured to the outer periphery of the insulator body (66) such that recesses (70) formed in the insulator body (66) are closed off by the casing members (68) to define variable volume chambers (72).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
A system as claimed in claim 9, characterized in that in said chambered elastomeric insulator (64'), said connection nipples (74) are arranged in the interior of said variable volume chambers (72).
