Abstract

Abstract The present invention discloses AC electrodynamic machines, such as electric motors, which are able to be operated in either a high speed mode or a low speed mode by not energising one (7) of the windings (6, 7, 8, 9) of the machine or by energising the one winding (7) so as to induce a magnetic pole of reverse polarity to that conventionally induced, respectively. Methods of operating AC electrodynamic machines are also disclosed.

Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
A machine as claimed in Claim 2 wherein said further winding (52) is arranged to be energised to induce a magnetic pole of reverse polarity as said induced pole of said one winding (53) to operate said machine in a further low speed mode.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
A machine as claimed in Claim 2 wherein said further winding (52) is arranged to be energised to induce a magnetic pole of the same polarity as said induced pole of said one winding (53).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4 wherein said windings are distributed windings.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
A machine as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said windings are wound on salient poles (2-5 ; 16-21).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 6 comprising an AC electric motor.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
A machine as claimed in Claim 7 selected from the class consisting of synchronous motors and induction motors including capacitor start induction motors, shaded pole induction motors, split phase induction motors, and capacitor start and run induction motors.
Claim 10

A machine as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 having shaded poles (2, 4) and switch means (52) to short circuit either one of two shading windings (11, 12) located one to each side of each pole (2).
Claim 11
Independent Claim 99 words
A method of operating an AC electrodynamic machine having a plurality of pairs of windings (6,8 ; 7,9); each winding (6-9), when energised, inducing a magnetic pole, said method comprising the steps of operating said machine in a first, high speed, mode by leaving one winding (7) unenergised and energising the remainder of said windings (6, 8, 9) to induce magnetic poles of opposite polarity by adjacent windings; and operating said machine in a second, low speed mode by energising said one winding (7) to induce a magnetic pole of the same polarity as its adjacent winding (6, 8).
Claim 12
Claim 13
