Abstract

Abstract A variable-ratio drive mechanism has longitudinally adjustable pulley halves 30, 72 operated by fluid pressure which acts on piston and cylinder structures operatively connected to the adjustable pulley halves. The fluid pressure in one of the piston and cylinder structures is controlled by a valve spool 102 responsive to an actuator 112 on which a lever member 132 is pivotally disposed and maintained in abutment with the drive surface on the adjustable pulley half 30. The lever member also abuts a control rod 140 which is linearly movable in response to command signals. Linear movement of the control rod initiates pivoting of the lever member and enforces or permits resultant linear movement of the actuator so that the spool valve is operated to change the pressure level operating on the piston 48, thereby permitting movement of the pulley half resulting in a change of the drive ratio. The pulley half also enforces pivoting of the lever member and attendant linear movement of the actuator to cause the spool valve to return to its neutral position when the pulley half has attained the position corresponding to the position of the control rod.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 222 words
A variable-ratio drive mechanism in which a pair of sheaves (64 and 68) each have a pair of facing belt-receiving discs (28,30 and 70,72) at least one of which is axially movable to vary the drive belt (66) radius, at least one disc (30) on one sheave (64) being axially movable by fluid pressure application thereto, characterised by a control lever (132) supported outboard said one sheave (64) for pivoting movement on axes normal to the plane of the rotary axes (14 and 16) of said sheaves (64 and 68) and having one end (134) in slidable engagement with said one disc (30), a control actuator (142) located outboard said one sheave and in engagement with the control lever in a sense to cause the said one end to bear against said one disc for pivoting, the control actuator being movable in relation to the movement of said one disc so that the control lever is pivoted in accordance with joint movement of said one disc and the control actuator, and a fluid control valve (100) operatively connected to the control lever at a point outboard of said one disc and at a point spaced from the control actuator, the fluid control valve controlling fluid pressure to said one sheave to cause said one disc to follow movement of the control actuator.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 222 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
A variable-ratio drive mechanism according tocl a im l, characterised in that the drive belt (66) riding on the two sheaves (64 and 68) encompasses a space which is between the sheaves under all conditions, and the control lever (132)is located in said space.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A variable-ratio drive mechanism according to claim 2, characterised in that the control lever (132) is substantially on a line intersecting the rotary axes (14 and 16) of the sheaves (64 and 68).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 39 words
A variable-ratio drive mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the fluid control valve (100) is connected to the control lever (132) intermediate the said one end (134) and the control actuator (142).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 58 words
A variable-ratio drive mechanism according to claim 4, characterised in that the fluid control valve (100) is connected to the control lever (132) by elements (112 and 130) engaging one side of the lever, and biased (128) against the lever, and that the one disc (30) and the control actuator (142) engage the other side of the lever.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 37 words
A variable-ratio drive mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the control-actuator (142) is a reciprocable actuator movable on an axis parallel to the rotary axis (14) of the disc (30).
