Abstract
Abstract A method of editing a document comprises displaying (70) a text sentence on the screen of a display unit, bounding (72, 74) an area partly removed of the adisplayed text sentence and reserved for the display of a figure, calculating (47b) a configuration which the bounded area has on the document to be printed, displaying (78) an area having a size in proportion to the configuration on the display screen, drawing (477, 478) the figure within the displayed area, and synthesizing (84, 86) the text sentence and the figure. When drawing the figure on the screen of the dispaly unit, the user can monitor a print image.

A method for editing a document containing a synthesis of a text sentence and a figure by using a document editing apparatus in which the display line pitch and the display character pitch on each line in a display unit (51 in Fig. 1) are different from the printing line pitch and the printing character pitch on each line in a printer (61 in Fig. 1), said method comprising: a first step (70, 72 and 74 in Fig. 3) of displaying the text sentence within a display area excepting a first area which is defined on the basis of the line pitch and the character pitch on each line in the display unit and by a desired number of lines and characters; a second step (476 in Fig. 8b) of converting the first area into a second area having a size which is defined on the basis of the printing line pitch and the printing character pitch in the printer; a third step (78 in Fig. 3) of displaying the second area on the screen of the display unit; a fourth step (477, 478 in Fig. 8b) of drawing a desired figure in the second area on the basis of a data defining the figure; and a fifth step (84, 86 in Fig. 3) of.synthesizing and printing the figure drown in the second area and the text sentence displayed in the display area excepting the first area.

A method for editing a document according to claim 1 wherein said first step comprices the steps of: displaying the text sentence over the entire screen of the display unit; designating the first area within which the figure is to be displayed on the screen; converting coordinates in the designated first area into coordinates values on a sheet of the document paper and deciding whether or not the converted coordinates values are within the sheet; and rearranging the text sentence in the display area of the display unit excepting the first area when the converted coordinates values are within the document sheet.

A method for editing a document according to claim 1 wherein said second step compries the steps of: calculating the number of lines of the text sentence within the first area and the number of characters on one line of the text sentence within the first area from position coordinates at least two corners of the first area on the screen; and determinsng the size of the second area from the product of a line spacing of a print format designated in advance and said line number and from the product of a character line of the print format and. said character number.

A method for editing a document according to claim 1 wherein said third step comprises the steps of: erasing the text sentence displayed on the screen of the display unit in said first step; calculating longitudinal and lateral lenths defining the size of the second area at the same first reduction or enlargement ratio so that the size of the second area is confined in the display area of the display unit; reducing or enlarging one of the calculated longitudinal and lateral lengths at a second ratio of a fixed value determined by the ratio between the dot pitch of the display unit and the dot pitch of the printer to obtain a corrected data defining the second area; and displaying a bounded area on the screen of the display unit on the basis of the corrected second area defining data.

A method for editing a document according to claim 1 wherein said fourth step comprises: converting a graphic data to be displayed into a vector data having a size confined in the second area; calculating the vector data at the first reduction or enlargement ratio; reducing or enlarging one of the- calculated vector data representative of the longitudinal and lateral lengths to obtain a corrected graphic data; and displaying a figure within the second area on the screen of the display unit on the basis of the corrected graphic data.
