Process for manufacturing polyoxyphenylenes
Abstract
Abstract A process for the preparation of high-molecular-weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols which contain alkyl substituents in both the ortho-positions or additionally in one meta- position, but not in the para-position, by oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at between 10 and 25 DEG C in the presence of a catalyst complex comprising a copper salt and an organic amine and in the presence of a solvent in the range from 1:1 to 20:2 parts by weight, the catalyst being metered as a feed into initially-introduced monomers. The solvent is advantageously ethylbenzene and is used in the range from 1:1 to 10:1 parts by weight, the catalyst is copper bromide, and the amine used is a primary and/or secondary amine, such as octylamine, dibutylamine or 1,4-dimethylpentylamine.
