Abstract

Abstract A composition comprising carbon black and two or more curable polymers selected from C 4-5 conjugated diolefin-containing synthetic polymers and natural rubber, is prepared by the separate steps (i) forming a mixture of at least 60% by weight of the carbon black with one or more C 4-5 conjugated diolefin-containing synthetic polymers in an amount of from 33 to 60% by weight of the total weight of the curable polymers, and (ii) adding the remainder of the curable polymers and any remaining carbon black to the mixture. Such a composition may be mixed with cure active agents, shaped and heated to produce a vulcanisate having very satisfactory properties.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 90 words
A process for preparing a composition comprising carbon black and two or more curable polymers selected from C 4-5 conjugated diolefin-containing synthetic polymers and natural rubber, which comprises the steps of (i) forming a mixture of at least 60% by weight of the carbon black with one or more C 4-5 conjugated diolefin-containing synthetic polymers in an amount of from 33 to 60% by weight of the total weight of the curable polymers, and (ii) adding the remainder of the curable polymers and any remaining carbon black to the mixture.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the mixture comprises from 40 to 60% by weight of the total weight of the curable polymers.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 43 words
A process according to claim 2, wherein the or each polymer in the mixture is selected from styrene-butadiene polymer, polyisoprene and polybutadiene and the remainder of the curable polymers is one or more polymers selected from styrene-butadiene polymer, polyisoprene, polybutadiene and natural rubber.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
A process according to claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the composition comprises from 30-to 80 parts by weight carbon black per 100 parts by weight of the curable polymers.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
A process according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the polymer in the mixture is one of styrene-butadiene polymer and polybutadiene, and the remainder of the curable polymers is one or two of styrene-butadiene polymer, polybutadiene and natural rubber.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
A process according to any preceding claim, wherein the mixture comprises 100 parts by weight styrene-butadiene polymer; from 0 to 100 parts by weight oil; and from 30 to 150 parts by weight carbon black.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
A process according to claim 6, wherein the mixture comprises 100 parts by weight styrene-butadiene polymer; from 20 to 50 parts by weight oil; and from 40 to 80 parts by weight carbon black.

Dependent Claim 42 words
A process according to any preceding claim, wherein the composition comprises from 30 to 50 parts by weight carbon black per 100 parts by weight of the curable polymers, and the mixture comprises at least 75% by weight of the carbon black.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 46 words
A process according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the composition comprises from 50 to 80 parts by weight carbon black per 100 parts by weight of the curable polymers, and the mixture comprises from 60 to 75% by weight of the carbon black.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 51 words
A process according to any preceding claim, wherein not all the carbon black is used in the mixture, the remainder of the curable polymers comprises at least two polymers, one of which is mixed with the remaining carbon black, separately from the other polymer(s) of the remainder of the curable polymers.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process according to any preceding claim, wherein the mixture is rested before the addition.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 16 words
A process according to any preceding claim, wherein the composition comprises one or more compounding ingredients.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 54 words
A process for producing a vulcanisate, which comprises mixing a composition prepared by a process according to any of claims 1 to 12 with a sulphur, sulphur-containing or peroxidic cure active agent; shaping the resultant mixture; and heating the shaped mixture at from 145 to 225 0 C for from 3 to 60 minutes.
